BATON ROUGE – A pair of doctoral students from the LSU Department of Accounting – Laura Alford of Natchitoches, La. and JP Park of Baton Rouge – had papers they co-authored presented at the American Accounting Association Annual Meeting, which was held Aug. 6-10.

Alford’s “Internal Control Deficiencies Related to the Cash Flow Restatements and Earnings Persistence” was co-authored with LSU Accounting Associate Professor Dana Hollie and Northern Illinois University Accountancy Associate Professor Shaokun Carol Yu.

Their paper shows that earnings quality is affected by effectiveness of internal control related to the statement of cash flow. The paper was presented at the meeting by Alford.

Park’s “The Joint Effect of Investor Protection and Big 4/Non-Big 4 Auditors on Audit Quality: Evidence From Initial Public Offerings in the U.S. Market” was coauthored with LSU Accounting Associate Professor Ken Reichelt and Assistant Professor Norman Massel.

According to the paper’s abstract, Park, Massel, and Reichelt examined how audit quality is jointly affected by the investor protection regime and the firm’s choice of Big 4/non-Big 4 auditors. The authors use financial restatements as a proxy for a low-quality audit and find that restatements are higher in the pre-IPO period. However, they also find that restatements are less likely for the Big 4 audit clients than the non-Big 4 clients in the pre-IPO period. The paper was presented by Park.
