Department of Accounting Hosts 2016 Research Conference

April 16, 2016

BATON ROUGE - The E. J. Ourso College of Business Department of Accounting hosted its annual Regional Research Conference on April 15 in the Business Education Complex with the University of Alabama’s Ernst & Young Professor of Accounting Rick Hatfield serving as the keynote speaker.

Hatfield is a lead accounting researcher whose research examines judgment and decision making in auditing settings. He is also the current editor of the Behavior Research in Accounting Journal.

“For the morning session, Hatfield enlightened participants on the publication process and provided valuable insights into the current state of accounting research, said Assistant Accounting Professor Christine Cheng. "He also commented on potential intersections between the various research methods used in accounting. In the afternoon session, Hatfield presented a working paper co-authored with G. Bradley Bennett from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, titled 'Staff Auditors’ Proclivity for Computer-Mediated Communication with Clients and its Effect on Skeptical Behavior.'

"The paper promoted an intriguing learning opportunity about how computer-mediate communication (e-mail) impacts auditors’ interactions with the client, relative to face-to-face communication. The authors results provide interesting professional implications regarding auditors’ skeptical behavior and client interactions, both important components of ensuring quality audits,” Cheng added.
