LSUCIA Celebrates 30 Years of Education
January 28, 2015
BATON ROUGE – In 1985, the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) designated LSU as its pilot school, making it the first university-based internal auditing training program in the world. Thirty years later, what was once the LSU Internal Audit Pilot School is now the Center for Internal Auditing and the benchmark for similar programs around the world.
On Friday, Jan. 23, LSUCIA celebrated its past, present and future during an event that focused on the 3,500 alumni who have completed the program and the organizations and recruiters who have hired LSUCIA students over the years.
In addition to the noteworthy graduate numbers, are numerous accolades that include a staggering 19 students from LSU’s program who have scored highest on the international CIA exam and six who have won the prestigious Esther R. Sawyer Research Award given by the IIA.
Statistics such as these are why professors from several different countries have taken LSUCIA courses to learn the teaching methodology and why more than 40 universities around the world use LSU’s program as the model for their own. They also give strong indication that the next 30 years will be just as successful.
"The foundation of the LSUCIA program is to enhance the value of an LSU degree,” said Glenn E. Sumners, director of the Center for Internal Auditing. “The quality of our students and the support from the practitioners has achieved that goal. The best is yet to come, just wait until you see the 2015 class.”
The LSUCIA provides a multidisciplinary program for undergraduate and graduate students from more than 30 majors offered by LSU. The dynamic curriculum emphasizes tactical, strategic and operational auditing as a value-added consultative function and provides training on corporate, governance, risk and controls. Students who complete the program develop an understanding of the internal audit profession.
