Office of Student Services
The Office of Student Services provides support to prospective, continuing, and transfer students in the LSU College of Agriculture. We assist all agriculture students in acquiring the knowledge and skills necessary to be successful in their academic programs and beyond.
The Office of Student Services is located in 106 Martin D. Woodin Hall. Office hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Office of Student Services is closed on weekends and during University designated holidays. Please note: incoming freshmen are directly admitted to the College of Agriculture; you do not need to visit UCFY for advising.

Students are encouraged to schedule an appointment via the Navigate Student App. Students who are unable to schedule an appointment in advance may schedule a same-day appointment in 106 Woodin Hall. Please note that students who schedule same-day appointments will be seen on a first-come, first-served basis.

NAVIGATE: Scheduling Appointments
Beginning March 2, 2020, LSU is using the new Navigate platform for students and advisors. This program can be used to schedule appointments with the Office of Student Services (advisors) and your major-specific faculty advisors. Navigate is available for both Apple and Android devices using the direct download links below.
To make an appointment with Brandon or Jennie, please follow the steps below:
- Download the Navigate app to your phone.
- Select the “Appointments” widget
- Select “Academic Advising”
- Select “College of Agriculture”
- Select the reason for your visit
- Select the date and time available.
The Navigate app will send you a confirmation email/text to let you know the appointment has been created. Students can check-in for their appointments at the front desk in room 106 Woodin Hall. Please have your LSU ID number ready to check-in.

Students in the College of Agriculture are assigned a faculty advisor based on their specific major and concentration. Faculty advisors can assist students in understanding more about their degree programs, learn about opportunities available after graduation, and also facilitate course advising for students. Frequently Asked Questions
The following FAQ is designed to address many common concerns and to point students in the right direction to get the assistance they need. Click on a category to jump directly to that section, or keep scrolling to view all of the questions and answers.
What are the requirements for entering the College of Agriculture?
Entering freshmen who meet the university admissions standards and have a declared major within the College of Agriculture will be directly admitted to the College of Agriculture.
Students transferring from another academic unit on the LSU campus will be admitted to the College of Agriculture if they meet the following criteria:
- earned at least a 2.00 LSU and cumulative GPA, a 2.00 on all courses applied towards degree requirements.
- a “C” or better in MATH 1021 or higher (Courses considered higher than MATH 1021 are MATH 1022, 1023, 1431, and 1550), and
- a “C” or higher in ENGL 1001 (ENGL 1004 for international students).

What is University Scholastic Warning?
At the end of the fall or spring semester, intersession, summer term, or LSU Online module, students will be placed on University Scholastic Warning if their GPAs are .01 to 9.99 quality points below a 2.00 on all work attempted or on all work attempted in the university (all LSU campuses). A notation to that effect will be recorded on their transcripts. Students will remain on University Scholastic Warning until they bring their GPAs up to 2.00, or are placed on University Scholastic Probation.
What is University Scholastic Probation?
At the end of the fall or spring semester, or an LSU Online module, students will be placed on University Scholastic Probation if their GPAs are ten or more quality points below a 2.00 on all work attempted or on all work attempted in the university (all LSU campuses). Students will remain on University Scholastic Probation until they have cumulative averages of 2.00 or higher on all college work attempted and on all work attempted in the university (all LSU campuses).
Students who have been removed from University Scholastic Probation will be placed on University Scholastic Warning or Scholastic Probation again at the end of any fall or spring semester, or LSU Online module, in which their LSU or cumulative averages are less than 2.00 as follows:
- If the student’s LSU or cumulative averages are .01 to 9.99 quality points below a 2.00, they will be placed on University Scholastic Warning.
- If the student’s LSU or cumulative averages are ten or more quality points below a 2.00, they will be placed on University Scholastic Probation.
What happens if I am dropped from the College of Agriculture?
Students who earn less than a 2.00 GPA for two consecutive regular semesters and whose LSU and/or overall GPA is below a 2.00 are dropped from the College of Agriculture. This is in addition to being placed on academic warning or probation. Students will receive additional communication from the Office of Student Services regarding how to appeal to remain in the College of Agriculture. Students may also choose to seek admission to the University Center for Advising and Counseling (UCAC).
What happens if I am dropped from the University?
Students on University Scholastic Probation will be dropped from the university at the end of any fall or spring semester, or LSU Online module, if their semester or module average is less than 2.00. Students dropped for the first time for academic reasons can be considered for readmission when they have been out of the university (all LSU campuses) for one regular semester. Students dropped for the second time for academic reasons must remain out of the university (all LSU campuses) for one calendar year. Readmission is not guaranteed. Students will receive additional communication from the Office of Student Services regarding how to appeal this decision.
What’s the difference between an “advisor” and a “faculty advisor” in the College of Agriculture?
Students in the COA can meet with either an advisor, which refers to a staff member in the Office of Student Services, or a faculty advisor, which refers to a faculty member in their respective academic program.
Advisors are staff members in the Office of Student Services that assist students with changing their majors and concentrations, adding or dropping minors, understanding college and university policy and procedure, submitting college and university appeals, complete graduation checkouts, and many other functions. To schedule an appointment with one of our advisors, Brandon or Jennie, please do so via the Navigate app.
Faculty advisors are faculty members that assist students in understanding more about their academic programs, including opportunities available to them during and after their time at LSU. Faculty advisers also assist students with course advising throughout their time at LSU. To see a full list of faculty advisors, view our faculty advisor page. Who should I contact if I have questions about what to schedule for next semester?
If you are a first-year student, you can make an “Advising” appointment via the Navigate app with one of the advisors in the Office of Student Services and/or your faculty advisor to discuss your course schedule for the next semester.
If you are an upperclassman (students with 30+ earned hours), you can make an “Advising” appointment via the Navigate app with your faculty advisor directly to discuss your course schedule for the next semester. A list of faculty advisors can be found on our faculty advisor page.
How and when do I schedule my courses for next semester?
Registration for fall and winter session typically begins in late March or early April of each year. Registration for spring, spring intersession, and summer terms typically begins in late October or early November of each year.
Scheduling priorities determine the date that a student can log into myLSU to schedule their courses, and are calculated based on a student’s number of credit hours completed. For a complete list of all priorities, including the dates and times scheduling becomes available to various groups, please consult the appropriate schedule booklet published by the Registrar’s office.
When is my fee bill going to be available? And when are my fees due?
Students receive an email via their myLSU account when fee bills are published. You will be able to obtain your balance due via myLSU at that time. To obtain your balance via myLSU, select “Fee Bill” under the Registration Services heading on your myLSU desktop. The due date of remittance of fees will be printed at the bottom of your fee bill and is also published in the Academic Calendar.
What should I do if my myLSU account says that I have a hold?
You may determine which University office placed the hold on your account by accessing your myLSU account and selecting the "Holds" link. Holds can be placed if a graduation date has not been declared, if you are re-entering the University, if you are a first semester transfer student, if you have not completed graduation checkout, if you are on scholastic warning or probation, if you’re in a major which requires advising each semester or if you are not following your major curriculum. If it appears that the College of Agriculture has placed your hold, you can schedule a “Hold” appointment via your Navigate app with the Office of Student Services. If your hold was placed by a different unit on campus, please contact that office directly. Other offices that may place holds include the Dean of Students Office and the Health Center.
What is waitlisting and how do I join a waitlist?
Online waitlists are a way for students to get open seats in full sections without having to spend all day, and night, trying to add. When students drop out of a full section, or its department opens seats, students are automatically moved off the section’s waitlist to fill the class. Being on a waitlist does not guarantee that you will get the class, but once a waitlist is turned on it is about the only way you can grab an open seat. It is critical that you regularly monitor your position on a waitlist to determine if you need to add an alternative course. Students will use the Schedule Request link in their myLSU desktop to join waitlists and will be automatically moved off of the lists and into courses as spaces become available.
How do I enroll in “Permission of Department” or “Permission of Instructor” courses?
Students wishing to enroll in courses that are designated as “Permission of Department” or “Permission of Instructor” must contact the respective department or instructor offering that course directly; you will not be able to add the course to your schedule via your myLSU account. For example, if you are attempting to enroll in ANSC 2050 (PERMIS OF DEPT) but contact the Animal Sciences office directly, as they are the department offering the course.
What is the maximum number of hours that I can take in a semester? What if I would like to schedule more hours that what is permitted?
For the fall and spring semesters, all students are initially allowed to schedule 17 hours. After all students have had the opportunity to schedule, credit hour maxes are automatically reset to 19 hours unless you are on academic probation.
For the summer term, students are allowed to schedule 12 hours, with a maximum of 6 hours being in session B.
For all intersessions, the credit hour maximum is 4 hours.
If you feel that you have circumstances that warrant taking more than the allowable number of hours, please schedule an “Academic Appeals” appointment via the Navigate app with the Office of Student Services. You will need to speak with an advisor in the Office of Student Services to discuss your options.
When is the last day to add or drop classes with or without a W?
All university deadlines are published by the Registrar’s office in the Academic Calendar. The Office of Student Services typically sends regular communication to students at the beginning of each term reminding you of the deadlines for that semester.
What if myLSU will not allow me to drop a course on my own?
If you are a student with less than 30 earned hours and/or a graduating senior, you will need to make a “Drop a Class” appointment via the Navigate app with the Office of Student Services to drop a course. Additionally, if you have an advising and/or CATS hold, you will need to make a “Hold” appointment via the Navigate app with the Office of Student Services to discuss how to have the hold lifted and to potentially drop a course.
How many “Ws” (course withdrawals) do I have available to use?
The number of Ws students are allowed to receive is determined by the hours students have earned to date.

What do I do if my classes were purged (all classes were dropped)?
If you were purged/dropped from classes before the deadline to add courses for the semester, students may re-add their courses via their myLSU account. Please note that it may not be possible to re-build your original schedule.
If you were purged/dropped from classes after the deadline to add courses for the semester, you can schedule a “Classes Purged” appointment via the Navigate app with the Office of Student Services as soon as possible to request late registration.
What do I do if I wish to drop all of my classes for the semester (resign)?
If you would like to drop all of your courses before the first day of class, you can cancel your registration by dropping all of your courses via your myLSU account, as long as you have not completed your fee bill by that point.
If you would like to drop all of your courses for the semester after the last day to drop courses has passed, please make a “Resignation” appointment via the Navigate app with the Office of Student Services as soon as possible. The deadline to resign for each semester/term is published in the Academic Calendar.
Can I enroll in a course if I have not met the prerequisite?
If you schedule a course in which you do not meet the prerequisites or corequisites, your enrollment in that course may be cancelled. Students should contact the professor and/or department associated with that course if they have additional questions.
How do I enroll in a course through Online Distance Learning (ODL)?
Students interested in enrolling in a course through ODL are encouraged to make an “Online Enrollment” appointment via the Navigate app with the Office of Student Services to discuss your options. You can also review a list of courses offered through ODL via the ODL website.
Under no circumstances will a student in the last 30 hours of their degree program be allowed to enroll in independent and/or online distance learning courses.
Am I permitted to cross-enroll in a course from another institution.
Cross-enrolling in courses is only permitted under unique circumstances. If you are interested in this, please make an “Advising” appointment via the Navigate app with the Office of Student Services. Please note that courses failed at LSU can only be repeated within the LSU system.
How do I change majors from one CoA major to another CoA major?
Students should schedule a “Change (Declare) Major or Minor” appointment via the Navigate app with the Office of Student Services. Students can change their major from one COA major to another COA major at any point in the semester.
How do I change my major to a CoA major if I am not currently enrolled in the CoA?
Students wishing to change colleges into the CoA may do so after final grades for the current semester have posted and before the last day to add courses in the next semester for which they enroll. Students should schedule a “Change (Declare) Major or Minor” appointment via the Navigate app with the Office of Student Services during this timeframe to complete an Enrollment Request form.
Students are encouraged to meet with their faculty advisors prior to officially changing into the CoA. Students can also utilize the recommended paths for COA programs, located in the LSU General Catalog, for assistance with advising.
How do I change my major to something in a different college?
Students wishing to change colleges outside of the CoA can schedule a “Change (Declare) Major or Minor” appointment via the Navigate app with their intended college to discuss entrance requirements, the application procedure, and course scheduling for their new major. Please refer to the LSU General Catalog for admission requirements for other senior colleges on campus.
How do I declare a minor (if I am a CoA student)?
Students should schedule a “Change (Declare) Major or Minor” appointment via the Navigate app with the Office of Student Services. Students can declare minors at any point in the semester.
What should I do if I am experiencing circumstances impacting my academic performance in a semester?
If your situation becomes urgent or requires medical attention, immediately call 911.
What are General Education Requirements?
The general education of LSU students spans the four years of undergraduate study. Students must complete 39 hours of coursework that provide a breadth of knowledge across the following six major areas:
- English composition (six hours)
- Analytical reasoning (six hours)
- Arts (three hours)
- Humanities (nine hours)
- Natural sciences (nine hours)
- Social sciences (six hours)
General education requirements are built into every academic program on campus. Students are encouraged to review their degree audit to see how the general education courses are designed in their specific program. A list of all general education courses can be found in the LSU General Catalog.
What is the Grade Exclusion Policy and how can I implement this policy?
Students may improve the undergraduate LSU and cumulative GPAs by repeating a maximum of three courses (up to 12 credit hours) in which a grade of “D” or “F” was received and requesting that the repeat grade be the only one that is used in the calculation. The specific regulations of the Grade Exclusion Policy can be found in the LSU General Catalog or on the Office of the University Registrar’s website. Students are only able to implement grade exclusion for courses initially taken and then retaken on the LSU-Baton Rouge campus. Transfer courses from other institutions are not eligible for grade exclusion.
Students interested in invoking the Grade Exclusion policy must do so by making a “Grade Exclusion” appointment via the Navigate app with the Office of Student Services. Please note that the deadline to complete this policy is the last day to add courses in the semester or term in which the subsequent attempt is made.
When are final exams? What should I do if I have three finals within 24 hours, or two finals at the same time?
Final exams are not held at the same time as the classes in which you are enrolled. The Registrar’s office publishes a Final Exam Schedule each semester, and this can be found on their website. It is recommended that students check their final exam schedule early in the semester to avoid conflicts.
If a student has three or more final exams covering more than seven hours of credit scheduled within a 24-hour period, the student may request permission to take no more than two exams on the assigned date. In addition, students who have two exams on the same date at the same time may request that one of the exams be rescheduled. To make these requests, students must schedule an “Advising” appointment via the Navigate app with the Office of Student Services. Students must have all arrangements completed by 4:30 p.m. on the last day to resign from or drop classes for the semester.
What is CATS?
CATS stands for Comprehensive Academic Tracking System. It is designed to help students reach academic success at LSU and make sure that they are progressing toward graduation each semester. Students must meet the critical tracking requirements within the Recommended Paths to demonstrate minimal progress toward degree completion.
Critical tracking requirements typically include both critical courses and minimum GPA requirements. The critical requirements for a given semester are located at the top of a student's recommended path. Additionally, all critical requirements are listed on the top line of each semester, and appear in bold throughout the Recommended Paths. Students may view their CATS status in myLSU by clicking “CATS Status” under the Student Services heading.
Where do I go if I need to complete an appeal for a retroactive drop, retake a class after failing twice, or have a Dean’s signature for University forms?
For any and all appeal-related matters, please make an “Appeals” appointment via the Navigate app with the Office of Student Services. Our advisors will explain the appropriate appeals process, issue any paperwork that is needed, and be able to answer any questions you may have.
How do I declare my graduation date? When should I do this?
Students can declare their graduation date via their myLSU account under the Student Services module. Once a student has completed at least 92 credit hours, an anticipated graduation date must be declared. If you are within a year of graduating, please schedule an “Advising” appointment via the Navigate app with the Office of Student Services for additional questions about declaring a graduation date.
What is the graduation check-out process?
College of Agriculture students will be contacted the semester before their intended graduation semester to complete a senior checkout with our Office of Student Services. This senior checkout includes completing a diploma information sheet and reviewing your degree audit to ensure you are aware of all remaining courses needed to graduate. These checkouts typically are completed one to two weeks before scheduling begins for the following semester.
Where and when can I get information about graduation?
All information regarding Commencement and Diploma Ceremonies can be found on the LSU Commencement webpage. Additionally, the Office of Student Services will send regular communication about these ceremonies to graduating seniors as the information becomes available.
How do I graduate with University Honors?
Students must satisfy all of the requirements of their colleges, schools, and departments in order to be awarded a baccalaureate degree with honors. University Honors are determined, with summa cum laude if the lowest GPA is at least 3.9, magna cum laude if the lowest GPA is at least 3.8, and cum laude if the lowest GPA is at least 3.7. The determination of University Honors is made after computing two GPAs for each student, one on all work completed and the other on all work completed on all LSU system campuses. The two GPAs are inclusive of all grades, including grades previously excluded through the Grade Exclusion Policy, so all grades are used to determine University Honors. The lower of the two GPAs are used to determine eligibility for University Honors.
How do courses transfer from other institutions to LSU?
To see how coursework from other institutions has been evaluated to transfer to LSU, students are encouraged to review the Tiger Transfer Tables. If the course and/or institution is not listed on the Tiger Transfer Tables, it will need to be evaluated by the appropriate academic department. Courses are automatically reviewed by the appropriate department when transcripts are processed by the LSU Admissions Office. Students should submit all transcripts, course descriptions, and requested materials to the LSU Admissions Office as soon as possible.
Please note that LSU does not accept remedial or technical college coursework. Even if coursework transfers to LSU, it is possible that it will not apply to a student’s specific degree program.

How do transfer students plan their schedule for their first semester at LSU?
Transfer students are encouraged to register for Transfer Orientation at the beginning of their first semester at LSU. Incoming transfer students may contact the curriculum coordinator for their major before transfer orientation to discuss their transfer credit and schedule. Keep in mind that curriculum coordinators may not be able to advise which courses to take until transfer credit has been evaluated by the appropriate academic departments.
