Sweany receives Honorable Mention at Annual American Phytopathological Society -Southern Division meeting
Ms.Rebecca Sweany, a Ph.D. student in the Department of Plant Pathology & Crop Physiology, received an Honorable Mention in the Graduate Student Research Competition at the 95th annual American Phytopathological Society -Southern Division (APS-SD) meeting in Fayetteville, AR, 16-18 February 2018. The title of her talk was "Touch-independent aflatoxin inhibition by atoxigenic Aspergillus flavus biocontrol strains". Her presentation highlighted the discovery that extracellular chemicals produced by biocontrol strains of A. flavus inhibit aflatoxin toxin production. Aflatoxin is an acutely-toxic carcinogen that contaminates corn in Louisiana and other tropical and semi-tropical climates. Ms. Sweany is advised by Dr.Kenneth Damann, Jr.
