The Louisiana Governor's School for Agricultural Sciences
The Governor’s School for the Agricultural Sciences is a two-week, residential educational program for Louisiana’s academically talented high school seniors interested in agricultural sciences. This highly selective program will allow 20 scholars the opportunity to engage in college-level coursework in areas ranging from textiles and apparel merchandising to natural resource management. They will also develop leadership skills by working with LSU College of Agriculture faculty and staff. The program will offer courses showcasing the breadth, depth, and expertise of our agricultural programs at Louisiana State University. Scholars will participate in field experiences that will highlight LSU AgCenter research stations and industry partners to provide scholars with a glimpse of various careers in agriculture. The scholars will be divided into teams to participate in a faculty-led service learning experience designed as a community improvement project. Each team will develop a professional poster or presentation on its project.
The Governor’s School for Agricultural Sciences is completely free for scholars. Program costs include on-campus accommodations, meals, staffing, course supplies, program materials, transportation, educational trips and events. Scholars are selected through an extensive competitive application process requiring recommendations from the applicant’s science teacher and guidance counselor, a resume, a personal statement, and an essay.
The Governor’s School for the Agricultural Sciences has two goals. The first goal is to formally educate scholars in agricultural subject areas such as business, environmental management, plant and soil systems, animal science, and nutrition and food sciences. The second goal is to showcase current and future career options in agricultural sciences to the next generation of potential leaders in agriculture.
