Whitney McKinzie Achieves University Medal
Current Agricultural Economics graduate student Whitney McKinzie earned the University Medal for making a cumulative college GPA of 4.0 or higher when she completed her B.S. in Agricultural Business with a minor in Agriculture this past semester in December 2019. Whitney was honored at her graduation ceremony by being awarded her University Medal by the LSU College of Agriculture Dean, Dr. Richardson. She also graduated with Summa Cum Laude honors.
In her undergraduate years, Whitney was a part of the first-ever LSU Agribusiness Quiz Bowl team to claim a National Championship, which occurred this past summer at the 2019 AAEA Conference in Atlanta, GA. She was also involved in the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society, Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society, and undergraduate research with Dr. Maria Bampasidou and Dr. Jerrod Penn.
Ever since her involvement in high school FFA, she knew that she wanted to be involved in agriculture. Whitney chose to major in Agribusiness because it would help her better learn the business and economic side of the multifaceted agricultural industry. Her passion is to provide farmers with the resources they need to run their operations both more efficiently and effectively.
By majoring in Agribusiness, Whitney was introduced to the daily challenges farmers face and the important issues within the agricultural industry. She believes that by continuing her education in this field, her life will be shaped by constantly learning about the evolving field of agriculture.
When asked why students should major in Agribusiness, Whitney said, "The LSU Department of Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness provides a warm and welcoming environment to all students. The faculty in the department are caring and personable and I truly believe that they always have students' best interests in mind. The coursework involved in this degree provides students with a range of knowledge in the agricultural field, so it is easy to find something that you enjoy. I could not have imagined getting my degree from any other department." Whitney will always cherish spending Saturday Nights in Tiger Stadium cheering on the LSU football team and singing along to "Callin' Baton Rouge" right before kickoff.
