Summer To-Do List

July 8, 2014

While it may be quiet on campus during the summer months, the CxC staff is in full swing preparing for a busy upcoming semester.  School may be far from your mind right now, but don’t forget you can work on a few things this summer to save yourself time in the fall semester.

Résumé

Are you spending your summer gaining invaluable experience through an internship? If so, great!  Just make sure you document it now.  Updating your résumé may be the last thing on your mind when you are in the middle of your current position, but it shouldn’t be.  Instead of waiting until you need your résumé for the next job or internship, make updates as you go so you won’t forget exactly what you did and learned.  This will be a big saver of time and headaches in the future.

Digital portfolio

Creating a digital portfolio is a great to effectively display your skills and help you stand out among your peers.  If you are a Distinguished Communicator candidate, it is essential to create a portfolio as part of your DC requirements.  Your portfolio deadline is approaching sooner than you think, especially for December 2014 and May 2015 graduates.  Start working on your portfolio now!  Complete your Public Portfolio Plan Form, think critically about what samples you want to include in your portfolio, and meet with your Faculty Advisor and your CxC representative for feedback.

Job search

If you are nearing your graduation date, it is never too early to start the job hunt.  During times like we are experiencing now where jobs are at a premium and qualified potential employees are at a surplus, it may take longer for you to find your first job.  Save yourself unneeded stress right before graduation and begin your career research now.  The LSU Olinde Career Center has many resources for LSU students and recent graduates who are looking for jobs and internships.  Take advantage of these great resources on campus!
