LSU Strategic Plan 2025 – Planning Update

 

In November 2015, the University Planning Committee (UPC) began the process of developing a strategic plan to determine the focus of Louisiana State University moving forward over the next five to seven years. Since then, more than 150 people including faculty, staff, students, alumni and business leaders participated in focus groups to help shape the plan.  In addition, more than 2,200 faculty, staff and students participated in an online survey to lend their voices in helping formulate the goals and objectives utilized to develop the overall plan.  Following the research phase, university deans, vice presidents, vice provosts, faculty and staff senate leaders attended a Strategic Planning Leadership Retreat to further shape the core of the plan.  In addition to providing their opinions on the plan, this group confirmed a list of six values that underpin the ideals LSU Tigers value as a community: Creative, Culturally Adept, Collaborative, Globally Engaged, Innovative and Transformative. 

The resulting information and ideas from the retreat, along with the value set, was presented at a Strategic Planning Summit in September to allow further input and ideas from approximately 60 volunteer faculty, staff and students. After the summit, the UPC identified five Strategic Themes that form the core of the plan. These themes cover areas such as Culture and the Arts, Environment, Energy and Coast, Education, Health and Well-Being and Economic Innovation, and are sectors that not only demand LSU’s focus, but also allow the university to use its unique expertise in solving challenges that face our state, our nation and the world.

"We were very excited by the eagerness of the LSU community to participate in the development of the strategic plan," stated executive vice president and provost, Rick Koubek, whose office is leading the process. "We believe this reflects the passion and dedication our campus community feels toward the university and we look for additional involvement as the process progresses."

In addition, four Supporting Pillars - General Education, Operational Excellence, Career Excellence and Enrichment and Student Success - have been cited as being key to providing a firm foundation of support to help achieve the goals outlined in the Strategic Themes narrative.

“I’ve often mentioned to the participants assisting with the process that if the state of Louisiana created a strategic plan, these themes would be at the top of the list,” explained Koubek. “As an entity that plays an integral role in improving the quality of life here in Louisiana, LSU plans to be at the forefront of making positive strides toward addressing these critical issues. The strategic plan is our first step.”

Over the past four months, nine subcommittees consisting of university leaders, faculty and staff affiliated with specific disciplines, as well as one representative from the advancement team and members of the community were formed to ensure that the core strategies can be funded and the university allocates the physical space needed to support them. Each subcommittee developed three to five core strategies that provided a foundation to achieve the broader goal of the Strategic Theme. By mid-February, the sub-committees fine-tuned their core strategies and initiatives and presented them to the Board of Supervisors.

During the month of April, the university will host Strategic Plan “See and Shares” to introduce the strategic plan to faculty, staff and students. Attendees will have the opportunity to share their feedback as well as complete an online survey to provide further input and additional comments. 

Ultimately, the resulting strategies of the strategic plan will serve as broad guidelines for divisions, colleges, departments, centers and other academic units to use when developing future individualized plans. In addition, the strategic plan will work in tandem with the university’s master plan as well as fundraising efforts to ensure a consistent effort moving forward over the next seven years.
