Schedule Overview

Thursday March 6th

Keynote Talk by AnaLouise Keating
6pm in the Design Building Auditorium
Reception Following at the French House

Risking the Vision, Transforming the Divides: Connectionist Perspectives on Academic Identities, Boundaries, and Lives

As the terms “women’s studies” and “gender studies” imply, these interdisciplinary fields–as well as others like “ethnic studies,” “gay studies,” “lesbian studies,” “LGBTQ Studies,” and “disability studies”--emerged from and are built around identity categories, interests, and histories.  What are the strengths and limitations in this formulation, especially given the academy’s “divide-and-conquer” approach, an approach that effectively pits potential allies against each other?  How might students and educators motivated by social justice issues effect radical change?  Drawing on Gloria Anzaldúa’s connectionist philosophy, as well as her own experiences, AnaLouise Keating explores these and related questions.  She calls for transformational alternatives designed to challenge disciplinary norms.
