Graduate Minor

We are happy to now offer a graduate minor in Women’s and Gender Studies.
It is designed for graduate students throughout LSU who wish to include
in their graduate studies a core of courses in the theory and practice of
women’s studies, gender studies, and related fields.

The minor in Women’s and Gender studies provides students with:

  • An understanding of the impact of gendered practices on social and cultural behavior and thought;
  • A theoretical foundation for analyzing and responding to these gendered practices and their outcomes.

Admission & Financial Support
A student must be accepted by the Graduate School and an LSU Graduate Program. After acceptance into a departmental program, the student should
work with faculty advisory committees in their home department
and in Women's and Gender Studies to identify specific coursework that
will be taken in WGS as part of their graduate studies at LSU.

Graduate research assistantships may be available from participating departments, institutes and centers. The primary source of financial support
is from the Graduate School and the student’s home department.

Requirements for the Graduate Minor in WGS

Students interested in the graduate minor in Women’s and Gender Studies
in either the Master’s or Doctorate program should complete the
WGS Plan of Study Form and submit it, through their advisory committee,
to the Graduate Advisor of the WGS Curriculum Committee for final approval
by the WGS Director. The student’s WGS Plan of Study Form will be maintained
in the WGS Office and any changes affecting the WGS Minor should be coordinated with the advisory committee and the Graduate Advisor of the Curriculum. Courses must be clearly delineated as to which hours count
as major coursework and which as minor coursework.

Doctoral students interested in the WGS Minor should complete the Graduate School Program of Study Form and list WGS as a minor field. A representative from the WGS faculty should be included as the Minor Professor. Approval of the Minor “program of study” is provided by the advisory committee, the Graduate Advisor of the Curriculum Committee, and the WGS Director.

Students minoring in WGS must complete 12 semester hours of course work including 6 hours at the 7000 level (both WGS 7150 and WGS 7900) and 6 hours in WGS -approved courses at the 4000 level or above:

3 hours WGS 7150

3 hours WGS 7900

6 hours of WGS-approved courses at the 4000 level or above

The required and elective coursework for the WGS Minor has been established by the WGS Curriculum Committee and approved by the Coordinating Council.
This Committee is composed of faculty who have an ongoing interest and
research focus in women’s studies, gender studies, and related fields.
Graduate students are encouraged to talk with any member of the Committee
to discuss their course of study and recommend additional course offerings
that may be included as electives for the WGS Minor.
