LSU SVM gives out $159,000 at 43rd annual Awards & Honors Banquet

BATON ROUGE, LA—On April 28, the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine hosted the 43rd annual Awards and Honors Banquet in the SVM Auditorium and gave out more than $159,000 in scholarships and awards. The banquet was sponsored in part by Nestlé Purina Pet Care and the Louisiana Veterinary Medical Association (LVMA).

 

Both faculty and staff awards were bestowed, and students received monetary awards, memberships to professional organizations, journal subscriptions, plaques, certificates and veterinary medicine manuals and supplies. Since 2004, the LSU SVM has distributed more than $2.2 million in scholarships and awards thanks to the generosity of private citizens, foundations, organizations and corporations.

 

The School of Veterinary Medicine Faculty Service Award was presented to Martha Littlefield, DVM (LSU SVM 1982) MS (LSU SVM 1994), clinical assistant professor in the department of Comparative Biomedical Sciences (CBS). An honorarium and inscribed plaque are presented to a faculty member who, in the opinion of his or her fellow faculty, has made significant contributions to the service aspects of the School of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Littlefield joined the LSU SVM faculty in 2009.

 

The School of Veterinary Medicine Faculty Distinguished Scholar Award was presented to Mandi Lopez, DVM, MS, PhD, DACVS, professor of veterinary surgery in the department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences (VCS), and director for the Laboratory for Equine and Comparative Orthopedic Research. An honorarium and inscribed plaque are presented to a faculty member who, in the opinion of his or her fellow faculty, has made significant contributions to the research at the School of Veterinary Medicine

 

The School of Veterinary Medicine Teaching Award is presented to the faculty member nominated by each class for the Zoetis Animal Health Distinguished Teacher Award. The class of 2017 and 2019 nominated Britton Grasperge, DVM (LSU SVM 2006), PhD (LSU SVM 2012), DACVP, assistant professor in the department of Pathobiological Sciences (PBS). Dr. Grasperge joined the LSU SVM faculty in 2013. The class of 2018 nominated Charles McCauley, DVM, DABVP (Food Animal), DACVS (Large Animal Surgery), assistant professor of equine surgery in the department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences (VCS). Dr. McCauley joined the LSU SVM faculty in 2006. The class of 2020 nominated Michelle Osborn, MA (LSU SVM 2008), PhD (LSU SVM 2013), assistant professor in CBS. Dr. Osborn joined the LSU SVM faculty in 2016.

 

Dr. Britton Grasperge also received the Zoetis Animal Health Distinguished Teacher Award. This award is bestowed to a faculty member to recognize outstanding teaching as judged by the responsiveness of his or her students. As part of this honor, Dr. Grasperge will be the master of ceremonies at the 2018 Awards & Honors Banquet and carried the mace at the 2017 commencement ceremony.

 

Dorian Lara, BVMS, companion animal surgery intern in VCS, received the House Officer of the Year Award. Dr. Lara began his residency in July 2016 and will finish in June 2017.
