Applicants are strongly advised to carefully follow all application instructions to avoid any problems during the application process. There are several steps to the application process, and all listed application materials must be submitted to be eligible for consideration.

Early submission of all application material is strongly encouraged, as it allows the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine Admissions Office to verify receipt of materials before the deadline. Due to the high volume of applications, exceptions to the given deadlines will not be considered. It is vitally important for all applicants to understand that the application deadlines must be met. Please remember, acceptance into any of the professional DVM programs across the country is very difficult, as there are hundreds of applicants being received for a much smaller number of available seats in the upcoming classes. The first step to the application process is submitting all material in a timely fashion.

IMPORTANT - The VMCAS application should be started first before doing anything else. Your VMCAS ID number will be necessary for the following reasons:

  • ALL letters of recommendation (known as eLORs) MUST be submitted online through the VMCAS service.
  • You must have a valid '17-'18 VMCAS ID number in order to submit the LSU SVM's $75 non-refundable processing fee.
  • You must include your VMCAS identification number in all email communication with the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine's Admissions Office.

VMCAS Application

All applicants to the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine must apply through Veterinary Medical College Application Service (VMCAS). For complete instructions on the VMCAS application procedure, please go to the VMCAS web site. The VMCAS application will open up May 11, 2017.

The VMCAS application, fees and a minimum of three eLORS must be submitted absolutely no later than September 15, 2017 at 12:00 MIDNIGHT (Eastern Time). There are no exceptions to the September 15th deadline!

Complete the 2018 VMCAS application now!

IMPORTANT -
When entering your coursework into the VMCAS system, please follow the directions closely. LIST ALL COURSES COMPLETED EXACTLY AS SEEN ON YOUR TRANSCRIPTS FROM EVERY INSTITUTION ATTENDED. LIST EVERY INSTANCE OF A COURSE IF A COURSE WAS REPEATED.

One of the biggest errors made deals with applicants entering their coursework. Applicants must enter ALL undergraduate/graduate coursework taken at every institution attended, regardless of whether courses taken are prerequisites or not, and please use the correct PreReq Code. (For example, enter ALL biology courses under the "BS BL - Biology" PreReq Code. Do NOT exclude any coursework. The LSU SVM will decide what courses are to be used as prerequisites and which will not. Failure to follow the VMCAS instructions (and the LSU SVM instructions) can result in your application being removed from the applicant pool.

eLORs (Electronic Letters of Recommendation)

ALL letters of recommendation (eLORs) must be submitted electronically through the VMCAS application process. Applicants and evaluators will now be able to easily track the progress of their eLORS online.

The required minimum of THREE letters of recommendation must be submitted to VMCAS no later than the Sept. 15th deadline. It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure that evaluators submit the eLORs through VMCAS by the Sept. 15th deadline. No letters of recommendation will be accepted after the September 15th, 2017 at 12:00 midnight (eastern time) deadline.  Additionally, no letters of recommendation will be accepted outside of the VMCAS application system. Letters of recommendation sent directly to the LSU SVM will NOT be accepted, and a maximum of six eLORs will be accepted by the LSU SVM. Committee letters are only considered as one letter of recommendation. NOTE - It is advised that at least two of your eLORs be written by DVMs for whom you may have worked, if possible.

Questions about VMCAS Application and/or eLORS?
Questions regarding the VMCAS application process and/or the submission of the electronic letters of recommendation should be directed to VMCAS either through the Student and Advisor Hotline at 617-612-2884, or by email at vmcasinfo@vmcas.org.

Official Undergraduate/Graduate Transcripts

ALL official transcripts for college-level coursework (undergraduate, graduate, or continuing education) SHOULD be sent to VMCAS no later than September 15, 2017 for priority processing.  Even if coursework is reflected on another institution's transcript, applicants must submit an official transcript from every institution at which one has taken coursework OR has received course credit.  This includes high school courses for which one received college credit.

The absolute final deadline for all official transcripts to be RECEIVED BY VMCAS is September 15, 2017.  Do NOT send any official transcripts directly to the LSU SVM Admissions Office; All transcripts MUST be sent directly to VMCAS at the exact address below.

VMCAS – Transcripts
P.O. Box 9126
Watertown, MA 02471

***  Transcript should only be sent directly to VMCAS and NOT to the LSU SVM Admissions Office. ***

Transcripts must arrive in sealed envelopes directly from the granting institution. If an institution has the means to send electronic transcripts through a verification service such as www.scrip-safe.com, then applicants should contact VMCAS directly via the Student and Advisor Hotline at 617-612-2884 or by email at vmcasinfo@vmcas.org. Applicants are required to submit official transcripts from EVERY SCHOOL ATTENDED with all post-secondary coursework regardless of the number of courses completed at one institution or whether the courses fulfill or do not fulfill the LSU SVM prerequisites.  Even if all completed coursework is reflected on one institution's transcripts, ALL official transcripts from each and every school attended must be submitted to VMCAS and received by the September 15th, 2017 deadline.

Applicants who have international transcripts should also contact VMCAS directly to determine the exact method in which the international transcripts should be submitted to VMCAS.

Are you taking classes in the summer 2017 semester? If so, and if you would like these grades to count towards your LSU SVM's Required Courses GPA and Last 45 Credit Hour GPA, you will have to hold off on finalizing and submitting your VMCAS application until you can list the final, official grades earned in the coursework section of the VMCAS application. The final, official transcript you then submit to VMCAS must have these summer '17 grades listed in order for VMCAS to verify these grades. If this is not done, the LSU SVM will not be able to use the summer '17 grades in your GPA calculations. If your VMCAS application is submitted without the final summer '17 grades, it is not guaranteed that the problem could be resolved by the September 15th deadline. The key is to list the summer '17 grades earned in your coursework section of the VMCAS application AND to have your final, official transcript with the summer '17 grades submitted and RECEIVED BY VMCAS by the September 15th deadline.
