Placement
Procedure in English 1001 & English 2000
Our procedure features a
combination of objective scores, placement on the basis of
writing samples, and self-placement. If you want to be in the
course that will help you most, you need to know the purposes
of the different courses, how you are initially placed in a
course on the basis of your ACT or SAT scores, and how you can
challenge that placement.
You will initially
be placed in either 1001, 2000, or exempted from both on the
basis of your SAT, ACT, or AP score.
To see the guidelines for initial placement,
see Guidelines.
For a description of the courses, see Course
Description.
You may challenge
your placement by the ACT, SAT, or AP score by writing an
essay that you will be able to submit to us on-line. Because
we want all parts of this process to be your work only, we
will require that you sign a certificate that your essay has
been your own work. You should not even have anyone help you
with the editing.
If you are exempted from a course in which you
are registered, you will need to drop that course and add
another in its place--unless you decide to stay in the course.
If you decide to drop the course, you should come to the
English Department office to get a petition to award credit
from the course or courses which you have been exempted.

Program, see Challenge Program. For
