Semester Assessment

I. Administrative Details for the Fall 2009 Assessment
  1. Finals. You should not give a final on Monday during finals week. English 1001 and 2000 teachers are exempted from the University Finals requirement.
  2. Grades. You will receive a score between 2-12 for each student. This score represents the combined score of two readers. How you use that score to evaluate a final grade is up to you.
  3. English 1001: Exemption from 2000. Scores of 11 and 12 will be exempted unless the professor recommends against it. Scores of 10 will be reviewed by the teacher, who will recommend to the director whether the student should be exmepted.

II. Timeline for Assessment
  1. Registration. Registration will begin November 9, 2009. If you are not teaching in a media classroom, reserve a computer classroom in the week before the assessment. You will use that time to show students how to register for the online assessment.
  2. Week of Assessment: Cancel your classes for this week. Students will be working online.
    1. Wednesday, November 25: Articles to read will be available.
    2. Monday, November 30: Writing instructions will be available.
    3. Thursday, December 3: Students need to turn essays in electronically by Noon.
  3. Score Reports: You will receive reports of student scores no later than Friday, December 11. You will receive individual scores for students in each section, a mean score for each section, the mean score for all students, and a graph depicting the distribution of scores in your section. You should use the mean and distribution to guide your grading. If your students score higher than average, we would expect a higher than average grade distribution. If your students score lower than average, we would expect a lower than average distribution.
