Description of Two-Semester Sequence of Firstyear Writing

English 1001
Primarily practice in expressive and informative kinds of writing. Students will write in several genres and be expected to pay attention to the formats characteristic of the different genres. Students will be expected to become acquainted with research strategies at the college level and appropriate forms of documentation. Students will also pay attention to style and mechanics. This will be a good class for students to gain the kind of fluency in writing expected at the college level.

English 2000
Practice in informative and argumentative kinds of writing—with a special emphasis on argumentation. Students will write in several informative and argumentative genres, paying attention to the forms characteristic of the different genres. Audience awareness will be particularly important in these genres. In informative genres, students will pay particular attention to ways of presenting information in response to readers’ needs. In argumentative genres, students will focus on methods of supporting their theses or controlling ideas. Significant research will be required for most essays.
