Welcome to the University Writing Program. Our writing program consists of English 1001, which students should take in their first semester, and English 2000, which students should take in the second semester of their second year. English 1001 is an introduction to college writing, featuring essays in several genres that vary according to the way in which writers research information. English 2000 is a research intensive course with several special emphasis sections focusing on subjects specific to areas of study. Some special emphasis courses are also theme-based. We encourage students who have chosen their areas of study to pick sections aligned with their areas of interest.

We focus in our writing program on helping students prepare for the kinds of writing tasks they are likely to meet in their other undergraduate courses. Along with the Writing Center and the Communication across the Curriculum programs at LSU, we want to create a web of support for you as you study and write in the next four years. We recognize as well the part that writing plays in personal, professional, and civic settings. We hope that what you learn about writing in academic settings will help you in many of the writing situations in these other settings.

We feature small class sizes and a cadre of teachers that will do their best to welcome you into the university experience. They will ask you to work hard on improving your writing, but they will also work on your behalf to make your LSU undergraduate experience one you will want to remember.
