Frequently asked questions
Is LSU UREC going to expand? There are no set plans to expand LSU recreation facilities at this time. Scenarios of what an expansion could look like are being developed to determine if there is student support for this type of project.
Parking is an issue on-campus. Will there be additional parking added in this possible expansion and renovation? Parking would be addressed with any project. Approximately 250 additional x-lot parking spots adjacent to the Student Rec Center could be added as part of any expansion.
How much could a UREC expansion and redesign cost students? LSU students currently pay $65 per semester in recreation fees. The possible scenario being discussed could raise the total fee to approximately $200 per semester, which is equivalent to about $40 per month. The fee could be increased in installments over time rather than a single significant increase.
What happens if I pay for an expansion and redesign but graduate before the project is completed? Since the fee increase will have to be used to fund the project, some students could pay an increased fee and graduate prior to the project’s completion. These students can be eligible to receive credit for complementary use of the new facility for every semester they pay an increased fee prior to the project completion.
Why would students have to pay an increase in their student recreation fee in order for an expansion and renovation of LSU UREC? The Student Recreation Complex was built by students, for students. LSU UREC receives no money from the University general fund and is self-supporting through the student recreation fee and self-generated funds. The current student recreation fee covers the cost to operate and maintain existing facilities leaving little room for significant growth.
Would UREC close for any given amount of time in order to get this project completed? The project could be planned in phases allowing new portions of the facility to open for student use as they are completed. This type of plan allows LSU UREC to continue high-level service and programs throughout construction.
Are the architect boards showcased final plans? No, the boards are simply conceptual ideas of what an expansion could look like. LSU students will have a voice in determining what an expansion would look like and what it could include should they choose to support an expansion.
