The American Red Cross Lifeguarding program provides lifeguards with the skills and knowledge necessary to keep patrons of aquatic facilities safe in and around the water. This program includes a lifeguard training course with aquatic-specific first aid and CPR training. The Lifeguard and First Aid certification is valid for 3 years and the CPR certification is valid for 1 year. Participants must be at least 15 years of age by the last day of the course. Prerequisites to the course include a 300 yard swim and a brick retrieval skill. This skill includes swimming 20 yards, performing a surface dive to a depth of 7-10 feet, retrieving a 10-lb objects, returning to the surface, and swimming 20 yards back to the starting position within 1 minute, 40 seconds.
To register for a Specialty Course, visit UREC Guest Services on the first floor of the Student Recreation Center. You may also register by phone with a credit card by calling 225.578.8601. Registration will close after the first class session. Classes fill quickly, so be sure to come by today!
