Dan Rice Awarded $158,000 Board of Regents Grant
BATON ROUGE – The Board of Regents has announced that Dan Rice, an assistant professor in the LSU E. J. Ourso College of Business Department of Marketing, has been awarded a Board of Regents Traditional and Undergraduate Enhancement Fund grant for $158,000.
Rice’s grant is titled “Louisiana State University College of Business Research Lab Mobility and Measurement Enhancement.” Assistant Professor Andrew Kuo of the Department of Marketing and Francis M. “Did” Coates Professor of Humanities Andrew Schwarz of the Department of Information Systems & Decision Sciences are serving as co-investigators.
This grant marks the second consecutive business school grant cycle, which is open to public and private institutions statewide, that Rice has been involved with the largest grant given to any business related project. The previous grant helped fund the development of the existing research lab’s infrastructure.
According to Rice, the grant will allow the college to address “a number of research paradigm shifts and related research interests that have created the need for the college to expand the capabilities of its behavioral research lab.”
While the lab currently features 28 individual computer workstations that are equipped with multimedia research equipment, one master control computer and one station equipped with physiological measurement and eye-tracking equipment, the grant will allow the college to add mobility and measurement enhancements, including:
- Additional eye-tracking equipment to facilitate data collection in complex and off-site protocols
- Equipment that facilitates the collection of eye gaze data from mobile devices such as tablets and mobile phones, which is critical as so much business is done on and through these devices.
“With this grant, we will be able to create a competitive equipment advantage that will allow faculty and students to conduct innovative behavioral research,” Rice said. “That will lead to various journal publications, working papers, dissertations and conference papers. This truly will enhance the college’s reputation through strategic mission fulfillment. Our behavioral lab and participant pool compare favorably to virtually any academic facility in the country, including our aspirational institutions. I’m pleased that the Board of Regents and the independent reviewers have again seen fit to support our efforts.”
A review panel consisting of two academics from out of state was designated to evaluate submitted proposals for the Board of Regents. Prior to meeting, each academic independently evaluated the submitted proposals. Of the 12 business proposals evaluated during this cycle, the proposal that Rice, Kuo and Schwarz submitted was one of the four proposals that the committee listed as highly recommended for funding.
The Department of Marketing at LSU’s E. J. Ourso College of Business prepares its students for careers in management, advertising, buying, product development, retailing and sales. Through its Internship in Marketing Program, students are able to apply the concepts and principles of the classroom and earn course credit for their practical work experience.
