03/19/2014 09:29 AM

BATON ROUGE – The second annual Geaux BIG Baton Rouge will be held Saturday, March 22, beginning with an opening ceremony on the LSU Parade Ground at 8:30 a.m. Geaux BIG Baton Rouge is implemented and planned by Geaux BIG Baton Rouge, an LSU student organization by the same name, and is supported and advised by LSU Campus Life.

LSU President and Chancellor F. King Alexander, Executive Vice Chancellor & Provost Stuart Bell, Vice Chancellor of Student Life & Enrollment Kurt Keppler, Women’s Basketball Coach Nikki Caldwell and City of Baton Rouge Chief Service Officer Kia Bickham will be present for the opening ceremony.

Approximately 1,700 LSU student, faculty and staff volunteers will then depart the university in teams for approximately 75 work sites and will serve until noon. Students will then return to campus for lunch on the Parade Ground.

Alexander, Bell, Keppler and Bickham are planning to serve alongside members of the Leadership LSU Class of 2014 at the Family and Youth Service Center, located at1120 Government Street.

Homeowners and nonprofits across East Baton Rouge Parish submitted requests for help completing a variety of jobs in January 2014. Geaux BIG Baton Rouge organizers assessed each site to develop working plans and to mitigate safety concerns, and volunteers were divided into teams suited to each site’s needs. According to the Independent Sector’s 2012 data, this single day of service will provide a benefit to the local economy equivalent to more than $113,000.

Media parking will be reserved along the circle drive that bounds the LSU Parade Ground nearest Dalrymple Drive.

Geaux BIG Baton Rouge is an organization that plans and implements the largest day service event at LSU that unites the university community and Baton Rouge residents through service in order to express appreciation for the community’s support. Campus Life enhances student learning through innovative initiatives that enrich the student experience through three tenets: leadership, service, and involvement.
