Congress to Campus: LSU’s Reilly Center to Host Former Congressmen

11/04/2013 11:03 AM

BATON ROUGE – The LSU Reilly Center for Media & Public Affairs, in association with the United States Association of Former Members of Congress, announces LSU’s Congress to Campus program. The Reilly Center will host two former members of Congress – Rep. Bill Sarpalius and Rep. Dan Miller in a series of events November 11-12. Sarpalius, a Democrat from Texas, served in Congress from 1989-1995, while Miller, a Republican from Florida, served from 1993-2003.

During the visit, former members conduct classes, hold community forums, meet informally with students and faculty, and do interviews and talk show appearances with local press and media.

“Congressmen Sarpalius and Miller have so much to offer our students in the way of experience, insight and wisdom,” Reilly Center Director Bob Mann said. “With Congress at its lowest ebb in public approval, we’re hopeful these two veterans can offer some ideas about how to fix our nation’s broken political system.”

The aim of Congress to Campus is to engage students and provide inspiration that will lead to greater democratic participation; whether it is in the arena of public service or something as simple as voting.

Congress to Campus brings together former members of Congress and today’s youth to increase civic literacy and participation. The bipartisan pair of former members are sent to college, university and community college campuses for short visits. This setting allows students to discover, on a more personal basis, what participation in a democracy entails.
Former members give students and faculty an authentic and candid “insider” look at the workings of American government and politics. Their personal experiences help to illuminate the democratic process and the inner workings of Washington.
