LSU Receives Higher Education Excellence in Diversity Award for Second Year in a Row

10/17/2013 01:55 PM

BATON ROUGE – LSU has received the 2013 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity, or HEED, award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, the oldest and largest diversity-focused publication in higher education. This is the second year LSU has been named as a HEED Award recipient.

“One of our goals as a university is to strengthen the intellectual environment by broadening the cultural diversity of the LSU community, and we are pleased that INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine has once again recognized our diversity efforts,” said LSU Executive Vice Chancellor & Provost Stuart Bell. “This award is a testament to the hard work and commitment of our faculty, staff and students to having a culturally diverse and welcoming campus for people of all backgrounds.”

As a recipient of the annual HEED Award – a national honor recognizing U.S. colleges and universities that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion – LSU will be featured along with 55 other recipients in INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine’s November 2013 issue.

INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine selected LSU based on exemplary diversity and inclusion initiatives, and ability to embrace a broad definition of diversity on campus, including gender, race, ethnicity, veterans, people with disabilities and members of the LGBT community.

LSU’s Office of Equity, Diversity & Community Outreach, or EDCO, oversees the diversity efforts of the university. EDCO is a division of the Office of Academic Affairs that is committed to fostering inclusive educational opportunities and an equitable workforce environment at LSU.

“The Office of Equity, Diversity & Community Outreach is proud to be included among the elite in higher education within diversity and inclusion initiatives,” said Kenneth O. Miles, interim vice provost for Equity, Diversity & Community Outreach. “We have a talented team who puts our constituents first. Their passion, commitment, and actions clearly define LSU’s commitment to our Flagship Agenda 2020: Transforming Lives, and I am privileged to apart of such a wonderful team.”

EDCO assists administrators, deans, department chairs/heads and directors in identifying and implementing policies and procedures to increase diversity in their respective areas; assist in building rapport among people who are different and reducing resistance to diversity initiatives; and provide evidenced-based principles and “best practices,” which strengthen knowledge, awareness and skills for working and learning in a diverse educational community.

“We hope the HEED award serves as a way to honor those institutions of higher education that recognize the importance of diversity and inclusion as part of their everyday campus culture,” said Lenore Pearlstein, publisher of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine.

In its recognition of LSU, INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine wrote, “In May 2013, Louisiana State University (LSU) opened a new and expanded African American Cultural Center and Women’s Center. Each 5,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility provides students, faculty, staff, and the community with tangible illustrations of the university’s commitment to diversity. These new facilities place LSU among an exclusive group of colleges and universities to have freestanding Cultural Centers.”
