Academic Sub-Committee Meets July 19, Discusses Final Report

BATON ROUGE – The fifth meeting of the Academic Sub-Committee of the Transition Advisory Team took place on Friday, July 19, at the LSU AgCenter in Efferson Hall. The sub-committee is part of the LSU2015 process for the reorganization of LSU. The meeting was streamed live via the Internet for those who could not attend and meeting archives are available at www.lsu.edu/tat.
 

This sub-committee is focusing on inter- and intra-campus innovation and collaboration, academic standards and the strategic deployment of academic programs and leveraging technology for learning. It is co-chaired by William Jenkins, LSU System president emeritus, and Dr. Lester W. Johnson, professor and chief of surgery and director of Surgical Services at LSU Health Sciences Center.
 

The sub-committee opened the meeting with a review of the LSU2015 process, and the timeframe for handing over a report to the Transition Advisory Team and ultimately to the LSU Board of Supervisors.
 

“We’re getting toward the end of the process,” said Christel Slaughter of SSA Consultants.
 

A presentation on the LOUIS Library Consortium was given by Sara Zimmerman, executive director of the Louis Library Consortium, to provide an example of how a collaboration across campuses has already worked in Louisiana.
 

“It is a successful model of collaboration among entities on various campuses,” Zimmerman said. “It is a collaboration across the state.”
 

LOUIS strives to ensure that Louisiana’s academic libraries are the premier source for authoritative information to support the research, teaching and learning needs of their communities; foster an environment of communication, cooperation and collaboration within the state; identify, evaluate and implement state-of-the-art information technologies; and be a leader in providing library information services and a model of collaboration.
 

During her presentation, Zimmerman outlined the structure of LOUIS and the services LSU System academic libraries contribute compared to the cost to operate those same services separately. The main focus of LOUIS is academic libraries in the state, and every academic library in Louisiana is included, which is about 47 total academic libraries.
 

The sub-committee also discussed academics at the Health Sciences Centers in both New Orleans and Shreveport.
 

“I think the amount of change going on in our medical schools and school of allied health are extremely significant,” Slaughter said.
 

Jane Eggerstedt, associate dean of education at the LSU Health Sciences Center in Shreveport, gave an overview of academics in Shreveport, including the funding challenge that the medical schools are facing.
 

Lee Engel, associate program director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program at LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans, also provided a similar overview of the academic programs in New Orleans.
 

According to Johnson, the concerns for the medical schools are sustainable and dedicated funding and maintaining academic autonomy.
 

The meeting closed with a review of the sub-committee’s draft report and a discussion on the items that should to be included, items that need more focus and items that need to be further flexed out.  
 

Kevin Cope, LSU Faculty Senate president, suggested that the report include a list of topic headers that indicate the broad areas that need to be addressed in the sub-committee’s report and beyond.  
 

Jenkins said that he wasn’t surprised with the outcome of the Academic Sub-Committee in identifying key issues that have to be addressed to sculpt and create the LSU of 2015 and beyond.
 

The sub-committee discussed the areas that need to be part of a long-term focus for LSU and will make the suggestion that there needs to be continued, in-depth studies of the issues by a committee that includes faculty members.
 

“This is the first leg of a long process, which is ongoing truthfully beyond 2015,” Jenkins said. “This is a process that shouldn’t stop.”
 

The Academic Sub-Committee met previously on Feb. 28 at LSU, on March 15 at the LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans, and April 5 and May 13 at the LSU AgCenter.
