Landscape Architecture Firm Led by LSU Alumnus Douglas Reed Receives Prestigious ASLA Award

BATON ROUGE – The American Society of Landscape Architects, or ASLA, recently announced the recipients of the society’s 2013 honors, which included a firm founded by an alumnus of LSU’s Robert Reich School of Landscape Architecture.

Reed Hilderbrand of Watertown, Mass., will receive the Landscape Architecture Firm Award, the highest award ASLA bestows upon a landscape architecture firm in recognition of distinguished work that influences the profession.

Douglas Reed, a principal in and founder of the firm, received his Bachelor of Architecture degree from LSU in 1978, while receiving his Master of Architecture degree from Harvard University in 1981. His role as a founding board member and co-chair of The Cultural Landscape Foundation affords him a platform for leadership in national debates that frame landscape architecture’s role in preserving and amplifying design heritage. Reed also lectures extensively on the value of landscape expression as a force in contemporary art. He also served two terms as the landscape architect representative on the Design Review Board of The Ohio State University and the Harvard Graduate School of Design. In 2011, he held residency at the American Art Academy in Rome.

Since 1997, the collaborative work of Reed and partner Gary Hildebrand – both Fellows of the American Society of Landscape Architects – has been recognized for its design, craftsmanship and extraordinary use of plants. The firm’s work is wide ranging, from residential and parks projects to cultural and academic institutions, and has garnered 12 national ASLA awards just in the past decade.

Selected by ASLA’s board of trustees, the honors represent the highest awards ASLA presents each year. The awards will be presented at the President’s Dinner on Nov. 18 at the 2013 ASLA Annual Meeting & Expo in Boston.
