LSU Students Place First and Second at Bayou Sales Challenge

BATON ROUGE – Students enrolled in LSU’s marketing independent study course recently competed in the fifth annual Bayou Sales Challenge and captured the top two spots in the event. Nicholls State University’s College of Business Administration sponsored the challenge, which was held in April. Jessica Stryk, a native of Richmond, Texas, and Kaitlin Jarnagin, a native of Richland, Wash., placed first and second, respectively, in the individual competition.

The Bayou Sales Challenge, which is open to all Louisiana college students, is formatted as a mock sales meeting in which students attempt to sell ADP payroll products to potential buyers. The event begins with a panel discussion about professional sales careers led by leaders in the field and then moves to team and individual competitions that are held in the college’s Sales and Interactive Training Laboratory.

Carl Herrick, an executive-in-residence in the Department of Marketing and the head coach of the LSU Sales Team, stated that competition from other universities this year was strong from Nicholls State University, Xavier University, Southern University and University of Louisiana-Lafayette.

“Judges watched the presentations live and voted on which students would advance to the semi-final and final rounds,” Herrick said. “The judges were all sales professionals or recruiters from companies that included ADP, Capital One Bank, Edward Jones, Republic Finance, Unifirst, State Farm Insurance and Northwestern Mutual.”

In addition to Stryk’s and Jarnagin’s first and second-place finishes, two additional LSU students reached the semi-finals. Those students, Leigh Shoenberger, a native of Mandeville, La., and Jordan Lewis, a native of Apopka, Fla., ensured that half of the individual competition’s semi-finalists were from the E. J. Ourso College of business.
