BATON ROUGE – On Thursday, May 2, at 3 p.m., the LSU Women’s Center will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony to officially open its new facility, located on campus at 5 Union Square in the same building as the Barnes & Noble at LSU, the new African American Cultural Center and the new parking garage.

Scheduled to speak at the ribbon-cutting ceremony are Elaine Abel, the first woman elected Student Government president at LSU; Katrice Albert, vice provost of Equity, Diversity and Community Outreach at LSU; Stuart Bell, executive vice chancellor and provost at LSU; and Racheal Hebert, a member of the Women’s Center Expansion Core Committee. In addition, Min Kang, a MFA student at LSU, is writing an original poem for the event that will be delivered at the ceremony.

The LSU Women’s Center provides support, referral and information to students, faculty and staff on issues and concerns related to women. The center also promotes the advancement of women’s issues and well-being through its services, educational programs and advocacy efforts.

The new 5,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility will provide an expanded library to provide visitors with greater resources related to gender and women’s issues, and enhanced programming with increased classroom space.

Throughout the year, the LSU Women’s Center is involved in several signature programs and initiatives, including the annual Take Back the Night candlelight vigil and march, Women’s History Month programming, the Esprit de Femme Awards, the Women’s Transition to Work series and the Healthy Masculinity Initiative.
