LSU Engineering Honors William Brookshire, Eddie Rispone and Jerry Rispone
BATON ROUGE – The LSU College of Engineering Hall of Distinction will honor three new inductees, William A. Brookshire, Edward “Eddie” L. Rispone and Gerard “Jerry” L. Rispone, at its 32nd annual Hall of Distinction ceremony on Friday, April 19, in the LSU Union Cotillion Ballroom.
Brookshire is co-founder and chairman of the board of S & B Engineers and Constructors Ltd., a privately owned company based in Houston, but with offices all around the world. Brookshire received a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering from the University of Houston in 1957. He then enrolled in the graduate program at LSU, where he earned his Master of Science and Ph.D. degrees in chemical engineering in 1959 and 1961, respectively. In 1967, Brookshire invested his life savings of $7,000 and borrowed an additional $3,000 to start S & B Engineers and Constructors with James Slaughter Sr. The business grew from those two employees to more than 7,500 employees globally.
Eddie Rispone, a 1972 LSU graduate with a Bachelor of Science in construction technology, is co-founder and chairman of ISC Constructors LLC, which specializes in electrical and instrumentation engineering and construction.
Jerry Rispone, a 1985 graduate with a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering, is co-founder, president and chief executive officer of ISC Constructors LLC. ISC predominantly performs work for industrial owners throughout the Gulf Coast with its home office in Baton Rouge and branch offices in Houston and Beaumont, Texas. ISC began in 1989 and today employs approximately 2,000 people with annual revenues of approximately $220 million.
“The College of Engineering is honored to recognize these stellar engineers at our 32nd annual Hall of Distinction ceremony,” said Rick Koubek, dean of the LSU College of Engineering. “Bill, Eddie and Jerry have enacted strong leadership through transformative roles in their professions and impressive contributions to LSU. These inductees represent the true significance of the LSU engineer.”
Criteria for election include distinguished professorial achievement, dedicated service to engineering and outstanding humanitarian activities. Eligibility is not limited to LSU alumni, although it is expected that nominees will have had some connection with and have shown interest in LSU. Nominations may be made by anyone, and are solicited each year from alumni, faculty and friends of the college. Election to the Hall of Distinction is by a broadly constituted 10-member board of election, which reviews and acts on nominations.
All three honorees are dedicated philanthropists and volunteers, especially in their commitment to the College of Engineering. The William Brookshire Scholarship in Engineering rewards numerous full-time undergraduate students who have a combined work and course work schedule of 30 hours or more. Also, the William A. Brookshire Graduate Assistantship in Chemical Engineering provides support to doctoral students and assists the Cain Department of Chemical Engineering in attracting some of the best postgraduate students in the field. Brookshire’s concern for LSU student’s education is further evident in his contribution to the LSU Engineering Student Crisis Fund.
Eddie Rispone partnered with the Department of Construction Management to fund two professorships, one through ISC and another through a personal gift. Jerry Rispone also partnered with his alma mater, through the Division of Electrical & Computer Engineering, to fund two professorships, one through ISC and another through a personal gift.
In 1979, the College of Engineering established the Hall of Distinction to recognize individuals who have made significant contributions to the engineering profession. Seven charter members were elected that year, and, generally, two achievers in engineering have been added each year since.
