Honors College Announces Launch of Ogden Leaders Program
Honors College launches program to give $5,000 awards to promote undergraduate student initiatives
BATON ROUGE – The LSU Honors College has announced a new program designed for students who desire to have an impact outside the scope of the stately oaks and broad magnolias of LSU.
The Roger Hadfield Ogden Leaders Program aims to facilitate extraordinary undergraduate initiatives by awarding up to $5,000 each to selected students. The program will support independently-designed, off-campus experiences where students will conceive, design, and conduct an original project. While their project may focus on activity outside of the state, it should address an issue that is of significance for the state of Louisiana.
“The purpose of the Ogden Leaders Program is to recognize undergraduate students at the Honors College who possess extraordinary ability, commitment and imagination and to encourage their independent leadership abilities,” said Honors College Dean Nancy Clark.
Honors College students may apply no matter where their academic interests lie; whether qualitative or quantitative, social science or hard science, students from all backgrounds are encouraged to apply. The award may be used for travel, equipment purchase or any other expense directly related to the project. The experience must be designed by the student, as the award may not be used for tuition, fees, internships or participation in any other experience organized by another person.
To qualify for the program, students must have completed at least one but not more than six semesters of study. The program expects that selected students will pursue an Honors thesis prior to their graduations. For more detail on requirements, see the program page at http://www.honors.lsu.edu/current-students/academics/scholarships-and-awards/roger-hadfield-ogden-leaders-program.
Applications are due April 15, and applicants should expect to participate in a finalist interview on their proposed project. The program goal is to award two but may award up to five students this year, depending on the strength of proposals.
The Ogden Leaders Program is made possible by an earlier $1 million gift given to the Honors College by Roger Houston Ogden, whose son lends his name to the gift and the program it supports. For more information on how to give back to the university, visit http://www.lsufoundation.org/.
