First Transition Advisory Team Task Force Groups Meet

BATON ROUGE – In another step in the process of reshaping LSU, three Task Force Groups of the Transition Advisory Team held their first meetings on Thursday, Feb. 21, in room 214 of Efferson Hall at the LSU AgCenter.
 

Task Force Groups have been formed to focus on specific areas of priority in the realignment process. There are six Task Forces Groups, made up of members of the Operations & Technology and Research & Discovery Sub-Committees, working on various subjects related to reorganization. These areas include commercialization and technology transfer, streamlining, external affairs, administrative services, revenue generation and technology.
 

During Task Force meetings, testimony is being provided by national and local subject matter experts. Reports and findings are being discussed and input from the public is being heard. Information from the Task Force meetings will become part of a final report to be submitted to the Transition Advisory Team and ultimately to the LSU Board of Supervisors.
 

The three Task Force Groups that met on Feb. 21 were the Administrative Services Task Force, the Technology Task Force and the Revenue Generation Task Force.
 

Lee Griffin, co-chair of the Finance and Revenue Sub-Committee, opened each task force meeting by asking the group to concentrate on best practices, try to figure out what our best practices are and think about what your impediments are to efficiencies and effectiveness.
 

“I was impressed with the commitment of everyone in the room to do what’s right for LSU,” Griffin said. “We all believe there are wonderful ways to improve efficiency and effectiveness through technology. I think we’ve got great opportunities to make wonderful strides.”
 

The Task Force Groups were given their charter, outlined areas of opportunity in which to focus, identified potential subject matter experts to bring into future discussions and finished with each group’s next steps.
 

The largest of the three tasks forces that met today, the Administrative Services Task Force, is focusing on improving efficiency, identifying barriers and adopting service structures through analysis of internal university processes, external regulatory impediments, insurance and risk management, employee benefits and LA GRAD Act 2.0.  The Administrative Services Task Force heard from member representatives throughout the system. Each representative identified opportunities for improvement on their campuses and areas where collaboration could benefit the system as a whole.
 

The Technology Task Force is looking at the changing culture, promoting efficiency and encouraging innovation. Academic research, administration and leveraging data to drive innovation will be reviewed. During the meeting the Technology Task Force decided to structure their findings into short, medium and long term opportunities. For the short term, they agreed to look at each campus’ current expenditures and determine if savings could be realized by negotiating vendor agreements that encompass all campuses.
 

The Revenue Generation Task Force is focusing on identifying new revenue streams. Areas of revenue generation will include self-generated streams, governmental (primarily federal) sponsored research and monetized assets.
 

The Revenue Generation Task Force welcomed Thomas Klei, LSU interim vice chancellor for research and economic development, to discuss LSU’s sponsored research efforts; Robert Kuhn, interim vice chancellor for finance and administrative services and chief financial officer at LSU, to discuss the university’s sources of revenue; and Wendy Simoneaux, LSU System chief financial officer, to discuss the LSU System’s sources of revenue. Each of these presentations helped to paint a clearer picture of funding sources throughout the system and identify areas of opportunity that should be explored further.
 

The next Task Force Group to meet will be the Commercialization and Technology Transfer Task Force on Feb. 27 at 10 a.m. in the LSU-Shreveport Noel Library 3rd Floor Assembly Room.
 

The Administrative Services Task Force, the Technology Task Force and the Revenue Generation Task Force will next meet on March 7 in Baton Rouge.
