LSU Lab School Students Organize Christmas Dance Fundraiser For Needy Family

12/18/2012 02:40 PM

BATON ROUGE – LSU Laboratory School students are getting into the holiday spirit early by giving back to those in need.

Instead of accepting gifts for their birthdays this year, Lab School sixth graders Christian Sexton, Nathan Gilly and Spencer Thomas organized a large dance party where they collected gift cards for a needy family identified through Catholic Charities in Baton Rouge. This year, the “adopted” family consisted of a single mom and three boys.

The boys hosted their second annual charity dance party for their Lab School classmates in November. Each student was asked to bring a gift card in lieu of a birthday gift. The gift cards were then used to help purchase gifts for the needy family.

“It is fun to help people that don’t have as much as we have and it was really cool to do that with a dance party,” Gilly said.

Instead of simply doling out gift cards to the family, the boys actually shop for presents selected from the family’s wish list provided by Catholic Charities. More important to the family than toys were necessary items such as kitchen appliances, towels, sheets and clothes.  Nevertheless, the students made certain each boy will receive a bicycle and some toys for Christmas in addition to fulfilling their household needs.

“Christmas isn’t just about gifts and the Christmas tree. It’s more about giving to those who are less fortunate,” Thomas said.

This is the fourth year Sexton has forgone birthday presents in favor of giving gifts to families in need across Baton Rouge.

“I am most proud of the fact that, during the past four years I have done this, more and more people have gotten involved by adopting their own families,” Sexton said. “Really, if I can do this, anybody can.”

Sexton, Gilly and Thomas would like to extend a special thanks to all of their classmates, the University High School Class of 2019, for making these holiday donations possible.

The LSU Laboratory School provides clinical teaching experiences for pre- and in-service teachers, and represents the highest standards of effective instructional delivery and assessment. The school is proud to be the first International Baccalaureate Diploma Program in Louisiana and ranked by the state as a 5-Star School.
