BATON ROUGE – Keena Arbuthnot, assistant professor in the LSU College of Human Sciences & Education’s School of Education, has been invited to serve as a faculty fellow at Teachers College at Columbia University in New York.

In her award letter, Ernest Morrell, professor of education and director of the Institute for Urban and Minority Education at Teachers College, said, “It is our hope that your fellowship will stimulate significant interest among the faculty and students as we consider new directions in urban educational scholarship.”

Goals the Teachers College established for the lectures include engaging faculty and students, and translating research and theory into practice for local teachers, school administrators and residents of the Harlem community.

With that in mind, on March 6 and 7, 2013, Arbuthnot will present “Filling in the Blanks: Understanding Standardized Testing and the Black-White Achievement Gap,” based on research reported in her 2011 book by the same name. “Filling in the Blanks” presents several new theories that address why black students do not perform as well as their white counterparts, detailing novel and innovative perspectives to understanding these test performance differences.

“I am honored to be chosen as a faculty fellow, and I am very excited about having the opportunity to share my work with the faculty and students at Teachers College and the Harlem community,” said Arbuthnot.

One of the top 100 schools of education in the nation as ranked by U.S. News & World Report, the LSU School of Education offers undergraduate and graduate programs in curriculum and instruction and in educational leadership, research and counseling. The school prepares professional educational leaders and scholars knowledgeable in contemporary issues in education.
