LSU to Host Undergraduate Research Conference

BATON ROUGE – The LSU Office of Strategic Initiatives is sponsoring the fourth annual LSU Undergraduate Research Conference, or URC, titled “Excite, Explore, Experiment,” on Friday, Oct. 26, from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the LSU Student Union.

 

This event will feature 130 poster and oral presentations in a competition among undergraduate researchers in the Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics, or STEM, disciplines and the social sciences. These students represent universities across the state, including LSU, Xavier University of Louisiana, Southern University, Southern University at New Orleans, University of New Orleans, Southeastern Louisiana University as well as several colleges from the state of Mississippi.   

 

The keynote speaker for the LSU URC is Graham Walker from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, or MIT. Walker is an American Cancer Society Professor and Howard Hughes Medical Institute, or HHMI, Professor in the Department of Biology. In addition to his research in DNA repair, Walker has been in charge of the MIT undergraduate program in Biology for 19 years, and has directed MIT’s HHMI-funded program in undergraduate education in the biological sciences since its inception in 1989. He has been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and was named an AAAS Fellow in 2009.  Walker’s keynote address is titled, “Inspiration and Engagement in Education.”

 

The LSU URC 2012 event also includes two afternoon workshops on topics related to attaining a Ph.D.; the first, “Get a Ph.D. and Work in Industry” and the second, “Effectively Using Your Undergraduate Years to Prepare Yourself for that Ph.D.” An awards ceremony will conclude the program, which is co-sponsored by the LSU Office of Strategic Initiatives and the LSU College of Science.  

 

Opportunities for undergraduate research have existed at Louisiana universities for more than 15 years, predominantly in the STEM disciplines. The campus community and general public are all welcomed to attend this event to support the work and enthusiasm of these students.
