Postponed: Grand Opening Celebration for New Barnes & Noble at LSU Bookstore

Bookstore planned to open Oct. 22, grand opening and ribbon cutting on Nov. 2

10/19/2012 02:43 PM

The ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Barnes & Noble at LSU, originally scheduled for Nov. 2, has been postponed. Barnes & Noble officials were unable to travel to Baton Rouge due to Hurricane Sandy, so the ribbon-cutting ceremony will be rescheduled. The rescheduled date will be announced in the near future. Grand opening events will still take place at the bookstore through the weekend.

BATON ROUGE – LSU is proud to announce the grand opening ribbon-cutting celebration of its new bookstore, Barnes & Noble at LSU, will take place on Friday, Nov. 2. The new bookstore, expected to open starting on Monday, Oct. 22, is located in the new LSU Union Square development on Highland Road.

On Friday, Nov. 2, the doors will open at 8 a.m. with free coffee being offered in the beautiful new café, while supplies last. Throughout the day, there will be giveaways, grand-opening sales and samplings.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place at 11 a.m., attended by LSU administrators and Barnes & Noble officials, including Vice President Patrick Maloney, followed by a reception in the café. At 2:30 p.m., authors Amanda Morgan and Jessica McDaniel will be signing copies of their children’s book, “Goodnight Tigers,” an LSU-themed version of “Goodnight Moon.” At 4 p.m., author Smiley Anders, The Advocate columnist and LSU Manship School of Mass Communication Hall of Famer, will be signing copies of his new book, “Smiley! A Laughing Matter.”

To celebrate the bookstore’s new location, the Barnes & Noble at LSU bookstore will host an “event a day,” beginning Oct. 22, and culminating with the grand opening celebration on Nov. 2. Throughout this time, students will have the opportunity to have their red-carpet photo taken in the Facebook Photo Booth to be posted on the bookstore Facebook page. A Facebook Tiger Search will also be held, where students will be on the lookout for a tiger hidden somewhere on campus. Clues will be posted on the bookstore Facebook page each day and the fan who finds the tiger and returns it to the bookstore will receive a prize. A photo of the winner, along with the prize, will be posted to Facebook each day.

Other events include book signings, samplings, café drink promotions, Magnum ice cream giveaway, Trivia Night, Xbox NCAA Football Tournament, student appreciation sale, Coke/Monster sampling, writing and editing workshop, faculty and staff appreciation sale, and Halloween celebrations.

To round out the grand opening festivities, the store will host multiple book signings by local celebrities on Saturday, Nov. 3. Beginning at 10 a.m., children’s author Mark Walter will teach children the ABCs of LSU by reading his book, “Tigers’s A to Z” in the children’s section. Former LSU men’s basketball coach and motivational speaker Dale Brown will also be signing copies of his inspirational book, “Getting Over the Four Hurdles of Life,” at noon. And finally, retired Lt. General Russel Honore will sign copies of his book, “Leadership in the New Normal,” beginning at 3 p.m.

A complete listing of events, times and dates is listed below and will be posted on the Events Calendar of the bookstore website.

In addition to the items customers would expect to find at other Barnes & Noble retail outlets, the new Barnes & Noble at LSU bookstore will offer textbooks, course materials, apparel and other university items. A café serving Starbucks products will also be housed in the store, as well as a Clinique cosmetics counter and Computer Tech store.
The new location will make it possible to schedule author book signings and other kinds of programming, making the bookstore a central gathering place for both the campus and the surrounding Baton Rouge community.

“We’re proud of our long partnership with Louisiana State University,” said Max J. Roberts, president, Barnes & Noble College Booksellers. “Our retail excellence, outstanding customer service and deep understanding of what students and universities need will help us transform the new bookstore into a vital part of the LSU campus and local Baton Rouge community.”
