08/24/2012 11:34 AM

BATON ROUGE – On Wednesday, Aug. 1, Summer Steib was named the director of the LSU Women’s Center by Katrice Albert, vice provost for Equity, Diversity & Community Outreach in the LSU Office of Academic Affairs. Steib will report directly to Albert.

In this position, Steib will oversee all functions of the LSU Women’s Center. The Women's Center promotes the advancement of women's issues and gender equity through its services, advocacy efforts and educational programs; provides support, referral and information to students, faculty and staff on issues and concerns related to women; and connects LSU and community members with local, state, national and international resources.

“Summer brings to the LSU Women’s Center proven leadership and ability,” said Albert. “We anticipate Summer developing and implementing high quality programming and initiatives designed to promote gender equity on campus and enhance leadership opportunities for women students.”

Steib will develop and expand Women’s Center programming, partnerships and initiatives that support the four goals of Flagship 2020: discovery, learning, diversity and engagement. These initiatives and programs include transitioning the Women’s Center from its temporary location in Hatcher Hall to a new, expanded Women’s Center located in its original location on Raphael Semmes Road, next to the new LSU Bookstore; maintaining existing programs like the Louisiana Women's Summit, Women’s History Month and Take Back the Night; and developing the Dr. Helen M. Carter Giving Circle, a group of alumnae and friends of the university who recognize the importance of supporting efforts relevant to women and making an impact at LSU.

“We are thrilled about her broad capacity to build strong relationships and coalitions with stakeholders across the region who are dedicated to the quality of life for women,” said Albert. “We look forward to Summer’s ability to cultivate LSU alumnae as the newly constructed Women’s Center is opened this spring.”

Steib is a native of Baton Rouge and holds degrees from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and the University of Alabama. She earned a Master of Arts degree in women studies and has been actively involved in addressing issues impacting women in the Capital Area.
