BATON ROUGE – The LSU Performing Arts Academy will open its doors for the program’s second annual Open House on Saturday, Aug. 25, from noon to 5 p.m. in the Music & Dramatic Arts Building, located on Dalrymple Drive.

The event is free and open to the public, rain or shine, and will feature performances by academy teachers, informational “meet-and-greet” sessions, open workshops and demonstration classes, guided tours and an “instrument petting zoo.”

The Performing Arts Academy, which opened in January 2011 as an expansion of the former LSU Music Academy, represents an expanded effort by LSU to connect with the local community. The academy provides high quality arts education to individuals from all walks of life and connects the local community with the resources and personnel of the LSU College of Music & Dramatic Arts.

Performing Arts Academy Director Blake Wilson said that the academy’s first year saw an abundance of successful new programs such as the New Horizons Band and Opera Camp, offered in partnership with the New Orleans Opera.

“It’s been an exciting year, and we’re engaging a broader range of people than ever before,” he said. “Our youngest students are toddlers and our oldest student is 83, so we’re really proving that the arts truly are for everyone, whether you’re pursuing a career or pursuing a hobby”

In addition to offering private music lessons, the LSU Performing Arts Academy continues to build its line-up for the fall to include programs in digital audio, acrobatics and programs for older adults like the New Horizons Band, a group for adults looking to learn a new instrument. The academy is also branching out to offer classes in acting, as well as in film and digital media such as Final Cut Pro and Motion 5, in response to the growing local film industry in Louisiana. Wilson said visitors to the open house will be able to sample each of these classes and more.

“It’s a great opportunity for folks to come kick the tires and try us out,” he said.
