One Book One Community Welcomes Author Karen Spears Zacharias on July 26
BATON ROUGE – On Thursday, July 26, Karen Spears Zacharias, author of the 2012 One Book One Community title “A Silence of Mockingbirds: The Memoir of a Murder,” will participate in a public discussion in LSU’s Cox Communications Center for Student Athletes.
Zacharias will participate in a discussion panel with experts from the medical, legal and child care fields, led by local newscaster Donna Britt. Zacharias will then sign copies of her book. The event starts at 7 p.m. and doors open at 6:30 p.m.
The book is the true story of a 3-year-old girl named Karly Sheehan who was murdered by her mother’s live-in boyfriend. Compelled to consider her own culpability in this tragic case, Zacharias pieces together what happened to Karly through court documents, investigators’ interviews, and interviews with friends, family, law enforcement officials and key witnesses. As the terrible story unfolds, the hard question emerges for everyone involved: Why was no cry raised to protect Karly? This is also the story of a father’s unrelenting love for his daughter, an immigrant’s tragic struggle for redemption and a journalist’s urgent call for change.
The event is free and open to the public. The Cox Center is located on the corner of Fieldhouse and N. Stadium Drives on the LSU Campus.
