LSU Food Science Doctoral Students Receive IFT Feeding Tomorrow Graduate Scholarship Awards

BATON ROUGE – Damir Torrico and Wisdom Wardys, both current doctoral students in the LSU Department of Food Science, were each recent recipients of the 2012-13 Institute of Food Technologists, or IFT, Feeding Tomorrow Graduate Scholarship

 

According to information from IFT, the $5,000 scholarships are awarded to students who demonstrate an outstanding commitment to food science education.

 

Torrico received a bachelor’s degree in agro-industry from Zamorano University in Honduras and a master’s degree in food science from LSU. His master’s research work involved the use of edible coating from chitosan and other sources for extending shelf life of table eggs during room temperature storage. For his Ph.D., degree he has proposed novel research on salt substitutes to be used in foods.

 

Torrico has authored and co-authored six refereed papers, and has presented five posters at the 2010 and 2011 IFT Annual Meeting and Food Expo and the Korean Society for Chitin and Chitosan at Pukyong National University in Busan, South Korea. He will be presenting two posters at the 2012 Annual IFT Meeting and Food Expo in Las Vegas. Torrico was named the 2010-11 Gamma Sigma Delta Outstanding Master’s Student; a member of the 2010-11 Gamma Sigma Delta Graduate Student Merit Honor Roll; and a recipient of the 2011-12 Barkate Scholarship in the LSU Department of Food Science.

 

Wardy received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nutrition and food science from the University of Ghana in Legon, Ghana, in 2007 and 2010, respectively. His master’s research work was conducted at LSU under the auspices of the International Student Exchange Program and involved the use of edible coating from soybean and chitosan for extending shelf life of table eggs during room temperature storage.  His Ph.D. work is focused on salt-substitution and its food applications.  

 

Wardy has published two refereed papers and presented two posters at the 2010 annual IFT Meeting and Food Expo in Chicago and the 20th Spring Meeting of the Korean Society for Chitin and Chitosan Busan. He will also be presenting a poster and competing in the Graduate Student Research Paper Competition in the Food Packaging Division at the 2012 Annual IFT Meeting and Food Expo Annual IFT Meeting and Food Expo in Las Vegas.
