LSU Recognizes Outstanding Faculty at 2012 Distinguished Faculty Awards Ceremony

BATON ROUGE – LSU recognized many of its outstanding faculty members at the 2012 Distinguished Faculty Awards ceremony on Tuesday, May 1, at 4 p.m. in the Lod Cook Alumni Center.

 

Chancellor Michael Martin was on hand to welcome the award winners, while Executive Vice Chancellor & Provost Jack Hamilton presented the awards and introduced LSU’s Boyd Professors, LSU Foundation Professors and LSU Alumni Professors

 

Hector Zapata, a professor in the Department of Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness, was honored with an LSU Alumni Professorship. Zapata earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in agricultural economics from LSU in 1981 and 1983 respectively. He went on to earn his doctorate in agricultural economics and econometrics in 1987 from the University of Illinois. He returned to LSU as an assistant professor in 1987 and has been a member of the university’s faculty since then.

 

LSU also recognized five recipients of the Distinguished Faculty Award: Andreas Giger, College of Music & Dramatic Arts; James M. Honeycutt, College of Humanities & Social Sciences; Sarah Liggett, College of Humanities & Social Sciences; Marcia Newcomer, College of Science; and Sharon Weltman, College of Humanities & Social Sciences.

 

The LSU Alumni Association recognized four faculty members with the LSU Alumni Association Faculty Excellence Award: Julia Y. Chan, College of Science; Laura Mullen, College of Humanities & Social Sciences; Marcio de Queiroz, College of Engineering; and John R. White, School of the Coast & Environment. The LSU Alumni Association also honored Kevin Casper, College of Humanities & Social Sciences, with the LSU Alumni Association Teaching Assistant Award.

 

The LSU Foundation presented Jonathan P. Dowling, College of Science, with the LSU Foundation Distinguished Faculty Teaching Award. Several individual awards were presented including the George H. Deer Distinguished Teaching Award to Stephanie Kurtz, College of Science; the H. M. “Hub” Cotton Award for Faculty Excellence to Lawrence Smolinsky; College of Science; the Brij Mohan Distinguished Professor Award to Kristin Sosnowsky, College of Music & Dramatic Arts; the Carruth McGehee Award for Excellent Research to Nathan Crick, College of Humanities & Social Sciences; and the Outstanding Service-Learning Faculty Award to Carl Motsenbocker, College of Agriculture.

 

Graham Bodie, College of Humanities & Social Sciences; Joshua Detre, College of Agriculture; and Jas Sullivan, College of Humanities & Social Sciences were recognized as recipients of the Phi Kappa Phi Non-Tenured Faculty Awards.

 

The Tiger Athletic Foundation presented four Tiger Athletic Foundation President’s Awards to Bodie, Raymond Chastain, College of Science; Emily M. Elliott, College of Humanities & Social Sciences; and Patrick A. Kolniak, College of Science.

 

The Tiger Athletic Foundation also awarded 43 Undergraduate Teaching Awards. The recipients were: Michele Barbato, College of Engineering; Joanna Battles, College of Music & Dramatic Arts; Dana Browne, College of Science; Teresa Buchanan, Honors College; Cassandra Chaney, College of Agriculture; Erin Coyle, Manship School of Mass Communication; Margaret M. Denny, College of Education; Joshua D. Detre, College of Agriculture; Robert DiLutis, College of Music & Dramatic Arts; Karen Donnelly, College of Education; Susan A. Dumais, Honors College; Virginia Engholm, University College; Stephen C.
