03/27/2012 11:29 AM

BATON ROUGE – Alma Dawson, Russell B. Long Professor in the LSU School of Library & Information Science, recently received the Louisiana Library Association’s Meritorious Service Award. The award was presented at the 2012 Louisiana Library Association Conference, held March 21-23 at the Shreveport Convention Center.

The LLA Meritorious Service Award honors a librarian who has demonstrated sustained and exemplary leadership and service to further the development, services and visibility of the Louisiana Library Association.

For more than 25 years, Dawson has served the library and information science industry through various capacities as a member of the faculty of LSU’s School of Library and Information Science, and as a member of the Louisiana Library Association. During her career, she has taught more than a thousand students and has been an active LLA member. She has served on various boards and committees and notably worked on behalf of the Ollie Burns Scholarship to develop an endowment. Dawson also served on the LLA History Committee for a number of years and, together with Florence Jumonville, published the book, “A History of the Louisiana Library Association,” in 2003.

Recently, Dawson served as director for Project Recovery, an active collaboration between the LSU School of Library and Information Science and its partner libraries and organizations. This program recruited and educated 30 new librarians for employment in Southern Louisiana libraries that continue to experience staffing shortages due to damage caused to communities by hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Project Recovery was supported by a grant awarded to the school by the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
