LSU and Alabama Come Together for “Building Champions through Service” Community Service Project in New Orleans
BATON ROUGE – LSU and the University of Alabama are sponsoring a joint community service project, “Building Champions through Service,” on Sunday, Jan. 8, leading up to the Allstate BCS National Championship football game on Monday, Jan. 9. More than 400 students, faculty, staff and community members from both schools will volunteer to improve the Boys and Girls Club of Southeast Louisiana, located at 1140 South Broad Street in New Orleans, starting at noon. The project is being coordinated by LSU Campus Life and UA Community Service Center.
Volunteers will spend the afternoon working to improve the club’s facilities, through painting, upkeep of the baseball fields as well as beautification of other sites in the surrounding neighborhoods. The project will begin at noon with a spirited kick-off ceremony featuring officials from both LSU and Alabama, their respective cheerleading squads, Mike the Tiger and a special thank you from New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu. Volunteers will also receive a free lunch, as well as a “Building Champions through Service” shirt. At around 12:45 p.m., volunteers will start working and will finish around 5 p.m.
Additionally, at 2 p.m., members of the Tiger football team will arrive at the Boys and Girls Club to help construct a football field.
“Building Champions through Service” is the third joint community service project between the University of Alabama and LSU over the course of nine months. Originally stemming from the tornado that affected Tuscaloosa on April 27, the partnership has grown to highlight the reciprocal and mutual beneficial nature of service. Previous projects include a donation drive and a trip to Tuscaloosa to help in the rebuilding efforts during LSU fall break.
