LSU Champions Excellence SCVNGR Trek Launched

01/05/2012 03:22 PM

BATON ROUGE – All season long, the LSU football team has proven its success on the football field. To coincide with the Allstate BCS National Championship game and the LSU “Champion” campaign, the university has launched a SCVNGR trek for fans visiting New Orleans to learn more about how LSU is successful off field as well.

The SCVNGR trek opened on Jan. 5 and will close at 7 p.m. CST on Monday, Jan. 9, just prior to the BCS National Championship game kickoff. The winner of the New Orleans SCVNGR trek will receive an LSU swag pack, including a hat autographed by Coach Les Miles and LSU BCS Championship backpack.

SCVNGR treks are themed experiences that link places together. Nine “challenges,” or quick, fun things to do at locations, are sprinkled throughout downtown New Orleans and the French Quarter. Each challenge has a point value. Once a challenge is satisfied, a player earns the points. In addition to the autographed hat and backpack, there will also be two virtual awards. Similar to Foursquare, SCVNGR offers badges, or graphical indicators of an achievement. As the LSU SCVNGR community develops, these badges become status symbols.

The winner of the New Orleans SCVNGR trek will be the person who has the most total points at the close of the game. In the event of a tie, the winner will be selected through a random drawing. The winner will be contacted through the email address associated with their SCVNGR account by the LSU Office of Communications & University Relations to arrange pickup or delivery of the prizes.

The New Orleans SCVNGR trek ties into LSU’s “Champion” campaign, which highlights LSU’s academic reputation with the goal of increasing both undergraduate and graduate school recruitment. All of the SCVNGR trek tasks require participants to take a photo of landmarks in New Orleans that tie back to LSU’s academic excellence. The themes of the tasks include Writing Excellence, Musical Excellence, Landscape Excellence, Research Excellence, Environmental Excellence, Literary Excellence and Language Excellence.

SCVNGR is a game all about going places, attempting challenges and earning points. The game is played from a custom app on iPhone and Android as well as via SMS. Instead of riddles to guide players to a place, SCVNGR concentrates on completing challenges at a particular location.
