Memories Made as LSU Athletics, Big Buddy Partner in Day of Mentor Program
BATON ROUGE – LSU athletics teamed up with Big Buddy as the organization celebrated its 13th-annual Day of Mentor program on Friday, giving elementary and middle school students a first-hand college experience.
The participants had the opportunity to shadow the LSU student-athletes representing eight different programs, which included football, gymnastics, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field, volleyball, and women’s basketball.
After meeting their Little Buddies at breakfast, the LSU student-athletes rode the school bus to campus. The Little Buddies went to classes and toured the athletic facilities, where their Big Buddies compete and train. The day concluded with a special luncheon and goodbye ceremony.
“As fortunate as I am, I always try to find ways to help out those who need it the most,” women’s basketball senior forward Courtney Jones said. “Being a lover of children, I find so much joy in seeing them smile. It was so wonderful getting to know my Little Buddy Kinzey and what she loves to do. Spending time just talking to her, hearing her future plans for life inspires me to become a better individual.”
“My favorite part of the day was seeing my mentee for the first time when she walked in our locker room,” volleyball’s Nicole Willis said. “Her face lit up, and she was so excited to be where she was. It’s a great feeling to be a role model for kids who need them.”
“I realize how blessed I am to be a student-athlete,” women’s track and field Katie Carroll said. “As little kids, we’re taught that the whole world is in front of us, anything is possible, and things are going to be all right. I took a lesson from the kids’ enthusiasm today.”
Big Buddy established the “Day of a Mentor” program in 1998 to bring awareness to the service of mentoring and to motivate members of the community to become involved and make a difference in the life of a child.
