Lifelong Learning Week in Louisiana is August 1-7
BATON ROUGE – Gov. Bobby Jindal has proclaimed Aug. 1-7 “Lifelong Learning Week” in Louisiana.
“Lifelong Learning Week” is a part of a national movement created by Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes located on university and college campuses throughout the U.S.
The proclamation acknowledges the importance of lifelong learning, which “dramatically enhances the lives of older people, both physically and mentally; and whereas, adults committed to lifelong learning are positive forces in their families and communities.”
In Louisiana, there are more than 1.4 million citizens age 50 or older, and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at LSU, or OLLI at LSU, helps to serve more than a thousand of the state’s seasoned learners in the capital area.
“Thank you to Gov. Jindal for signing this proclamation, which helps recognize all Louisianans who never stop learning,” said Tom Moore, chair of the OLLI at LSU Advisory Council. “There are over 1,000 OLLI members who enjoy life more because they know curiosity never retires and learning can be fun.”
OLLI at LSU, a membership-based community of adults age 50 and older, fosters lifelong learning through courses, informal gatherings, field trips and nature walks designed to challenge, inform and enrich.
Last year, OLLI at LSU attracted more than 3,300 course registrations and 1,300 special event registrations.
OLLI at LSU has three chapters: the Lagniappe Chapter and St. James Place Chapter, which meet in Baton Rouge, and the Felicianas Chapter, which meets in St. Francisville.
Other states including Virginia and Colorado have had lifelong learning weeks proclaimed by their governors.
