LSU Groups Join Forces to Support Victims of Recent Tornadoes at University of Alabama and City of Tuscaloosa

05/04/2011 04:33 PM

BATON ROUGE – In the wake of recent widespread destruction across Alabama and surrounding areas from severe weather, several student groups and campus entities have come together to promote a collaborative effort from LSU to show support for the students of the University of Alabama and the city of Tuscaloosa.

Below are several ways that the LSU community is offering assistance:

Tigers for the Tide Drive

Through the Tigers for the Tide Drive, LSU students, faculty and staff are encouraged to donate numerous items to aid relief workers, as well as those who may have lost their homes and/or personal belongings.

One suggested method of donation is by filling backpacks or tote bags with toiletry items. Items needed include toothbrushes, hairbrushes, shampoo, deodorant, sunscreen, bug spray, baby wipes, hand sanitizer, cotton balls, cotton swabs and feminine hygiene products, among others.

Items of clothing are also being accepted, with very gently used clothing preferred. Students are asked to please consider donating clothing as they move out of their residence halls or apartments for the summer. Unopened packages of t-shirts and underwear for men, women and children are also needed. Socks, footies or other clothing items for children are also appreciated.

Other items needed include batteries, first aid kits, flashlights, gauze, paper towels, toilet paper, blankets, tarps, diapers, formula and diaper cream.

Donations will be collected through Saturday, May 14, at drop-off locations throughout campus. These include:

  • LSU Office of Campus Life, located in Room 350 of the LSU Student Union;
  • LSU Student Government office, located in Room 150 of the LSU Student Union;
  • Any LSU residence hall front desk;
  • LSU Greek Life office, located in Room 472 of the LSU Student Union;
  • Donation boxes housed in each Greek chapter house.

There is also a need for LSU students, faculty or staff to help sort Tigers for the Tide Drive donations the week of May 15-20. Anyone who plans to be on campus following finals and would like to help sort donations, please email – using the subject line “Tigers for the Tide Drive” – with times of availability.

UA Acts of Kindness Fund

The UA Acts of Kindness Fund has been established to support an emergency assistance program for University of Alabama employees and students. Anyone interested in contributing to the UA Acts of Kindness Fund can donate online by visiting

Those who would like to make a contribution by cash or check to the UA Acts of Kindness Fund can do so by bringing donations to the Office of the Dean of Students, located in Room 333 of the LSU Student Union, weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Checks should be made out to the “University of Alabama,” with “Acts of Kindness Fund” in the memo line.
