BATON ROUGE – Jorge Pullin, Horace C. Hearne Jr. Institute for Theoretical Physics chair and professor in the LSU Center for Computation & Technology and Department of Physics and Astronomy, has been appointed founding editor of Physical Review X, to be published by the American Physical Society.

Physical Review is the most important set of journals in physics, founded in 1893 to advance and diffuse the knowledge of physics. It publishes original research and scientific and literature reviews on all aspects of physics. Many of the most famous physics papers published in the 20th century have appeared in the pages of the Physical Review family of journals.

Physical Review X, or PRX, is a new, open access, all electronic journal, providing a dependable resource of worldwide developments in the rapidly evolving field of physics. PRX will provide validation through prompt and rigorous peer review and an open access venue in accord with the strong reputation of the Physical Review family of publications.

“I am very pleased to be the founding editor,” said Pullin. “I view open access options as essential for the future of publishing. It should quickly assume a place among the most prestigious publications.”

As founding editor, Pullin will have to set up the initial editorial board, recruit the initial batch of articles and promote the journal at the largest physics meetings globally, therefore interacting with the most elite physicists both nationally and internationally. The journal is scheduled to go live Sept.15.

Pullin joined LSU in 2001, and specializes in gravity and black holes. His time is divided between seeking to modify Einstein’s theory of gravity to make it more compatible with quantum mechanics and studying gravitational waves.

He serves on the editorial board of the journal Living Reviews in Relativity and served on the board of Classical and Quantum Gravity and the New Journal of Physics.  He is also a member of the executive council and the executive board of the American Physical Society.
