LSU Animal Sciences Associate Professor Cathleen Williams Receives Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching Honor
BATON ROUGE – Cathleen Williams, an associate professor in the LSU School of Animal Sciences’ Department of Dairy Science, was recently selected as the 2010 Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching’s Louisiana Professor of the Year, according to a release from the organization.
The Council for Advancement and Support of Education, or CASE, administers the U.S. Professors of the Year program, which celebrates outstanding instructors across the country. Sponsored by CASE and The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, it is the only national program to recognize excellence in undergraduate education.
All undergraduate teachers in the United States, of any academic rank at any type of undergraduate institution, are eligible for the award. Entries are judged by top U.S. educators and other active participants in education. Criteria for the award include extraordinary dedication to undergraduate teaching, which is demonstrated by excellence in the following areas: impact on and involvement with undergraduate students; scholarly approach to teaching and learning; contribution to undergraduate education in the institution, community and profession; and support from colleagues and current and former undergraduate students.
With the honor, Williams was invited to the announcement ceremony and celebratory events, which took place in Washington, D.C. The events include an awards luncheon at the W Washington D.C. Hotel and an evening reception at the Folger Shakespeare Library.
Williams is the latest in a line of LSU faculty who have earned this prestigious honor. Recent state winners from LSU include 2009 winner Marybeth Lima, a biological and agricultural engineering professor; 2008 winner Maud Walsh, an associate professor of plant, environmental and soil sciences; and 2007 winner Carol O’Neil, Peltier Professor of Dietetics in the School of Human Ecology.
