On Thursday, May 2, LSU officials cut the ribbon on the new, expanded LSU Women's Center, located at Union Square along Raphael Semmes Road. The LSU Women's Center is involved in several programs, including the Take Back the Night candlelight vigil and march, Women's History Month programming and the Esprit de Femme Awards, and the new center will provide for increased programming opportunities. During her keynote address at the LSU Women's Center ribbon-cutting ceremony, Elaine Abell, LSU's first elected female Student Government president, discussed the many ways that the university has changed for women since her days as a student in the 1960s.
On Friday, May 3, LSU officials cut the ribbon on the new, expanded LSU African American Cultural Center, located at Union Square along Raphael Semmes Road. The LSU African American Cultural Center hosts a variety of programs, including the Multicultural Student Leadership Conference, the Black History Month Celebration, the Robing Ceremony and Pre-Kwanzaa. Donald Cravins Jr. was the keynote speaker at the African American Cultural Center ribbon-cutting ceremony and honored many of LSU's African-American leaders from throughout the university's history.
A libation ceremony was performed by Nomzamo Iyanu while Ipiama "Mama Ama" Kwan played a djembe drum during the African American Cultural Center's ribbon-cutting ceremony. On Wednesday, May 8, representatives from LSU’s Wildlife Hospital of Louisiana released a pair of bald eagles back into the wild near Gramercy after the pair spent nearly a month recovering from injuries at the hospital. The bald eagles, a juvenile that had been knocked from its nest and an adult  that had been exposed to pesticides, arrived at LSU only days apart and were nursed back to health at the university's Wildlife Hospital of Louisiana at the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine.
The LSU Chapter of EnvironMentors recently held its awards ceremony with Baton Rouge Mayor-President and LSU alumnus Kip Holden there to present the awards. EnvironMentors is a science and environmental science-based mentoring program that works to support and strengthen high school student success. On April 21, LSU's Gamma Zeta chapter of Delta Gamma Sorority held its biennial Delta Gamma Lectureship in Values & Ethics. Giuliana Rancic, E! News anchor and breast cancer survivor, spoke to the large crowd in attendance at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. Mike VI, LSU's majestic live tiger mascot, takes a drink from the pool in his 15,000-square-foot habitat on campus in the shadows of Tiger Stadium.
