LSU recognized 1,672 graduates at the university’s 279th commencement exercises on campus Friday, Dec. 14. The 1,672 graduates included 1,333 bachelor’s degrees, 259 master’s and professional degrees and 80 doctoral degrees. Thirteen LSU seniors, all hailing from the state of Louisiana, received University Medals for graduating with the highest undergraduate grade-point averages as part of LSU’s 279th commencement exercises. During the College of Engineering ceremony, a Doctor of Humane Letters honorary degree was awarded to Ed Steimel. Steimel has been a tireless fundraiser for LSU and each year, thanks to his generosity, the college awards the Ed Steimel Staff Excellence Award to an outstanding employee.
William Jenkins, interim president of the LSU System and interim chancellor of LSU, was the keynote speaker at the College of Agriculture commencement ceremony in the Student Recreational Sports Complex. Maj. Gen. Jasper A. Welch, a University Lab School alumnus who went on to graduate magna cum laude from LSU in 1952 with a degree in physics, was the keynote speaker at the College of Science commencement ceremony. Dan Borné (right), president of the Louisiana Chemical Association, alumnus, adjunct faculty member and public address announcer at Tiger Stadium and at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center, was the keynote speaker at the Manship School of Mass Communication commencement ceremony.
