LSU held its annual Candlelight Celebration on Tuesday, Nov. 27, that concluded with the lighting of LSU’s Christmas tree in front of the Memorial Tower. Almost 600 people packed the Claude L. Shaver Theater for the annual Candlelight Celebration, which included performances by the Tiger Girls, the LSU Gospel Choir, the Ballroom Dance Club at LSU, LSU's Cantabile String Quartet, the Baton Rouge Ballet Theatre and LSU's Schola Cantorum, and an appearance by Santa Claus. A celebration of Hanukkah, the eight-day Jewish holiday also known as the Festival of Lights that begins this year on Dec. 8, also took place during the Candlelight Celebration with a presentation by Hillel at LSU.
LaKeitha A. Poole (right) from the LSU Office of Multicultural Affairs shared the traditions of the African-American holiday of Kwanzaa during the Candlelight Celebration. A weeklong celebration held from Dec. 26 through Jan. 1 in the United States, Kwanzaa means “first fruits of the harvest” in the African language Kiswahili. The LSU Candlelight Celebration and Christmas tree are held in partnership with Volunteer LSU and sponsored through monetary contributions or in-kind donations provided by Baker Hughes, Baton Rouge Coca-Cola Bottling Co., Entergy, ExxonMobil, Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers, Shell and Schlumberger. To counteract the cold temperatures outdoors, students, faculty, staff and members of the Baton Rouge community were able to enjoy hot chocolate and coffee provided by CC’s Streetside Café and and cookies from Jason’s Deli before Candlelight Celebration.
The LSU Gospel Choir performed "Jesus is the Reason for the Season" during the Candlelight Celebration, featuring soloist Masia Ravare. The Ballroom Dance Club at LSU performed to "Let it Snow" during the Candlelight Celebration. Following the lighting of LSU's Christmas tree, the LSU Ambassadors led the crowd in singing the LSU alma mater in front of Memorial Tower to conclude the Candlelight Celebration.
On Wednesday, Nov. 28, LSU held the 44th annual Staff Outstanding Service Awards ceremony. The Staff Outstanding Service Awards are sponsored by the LSU Foundation and were presented to 13 full-time non-academic staff members from LSU, the LSU AgCenter and the Paul M. Hebert Law Center. On Thursday, Nov. 29, the Office of Enrollment Management celebrated LSU's largest freshman class with a luncheon in the West Stadium Club of Tiger Stadium. A student can be studying late into the night as the semester winds down. Fall semester classes conclude on Saturday, Dec. 1, and final exams conclude on Saturday, Dec. 8. Fall commencement will be held on Friday, Dec. 14. After the winter holiday, LSU will officially begin the spring 2013 semester on Monday, Jan. 14.
